Abstract
The invention is directed to methods of promoting myelin formation in central nervous system (CNS) tissue in a subject in need thereof, the method comprising administering to the subject a therapeutically effective amount of interleukin-4 induced gene 1 (IL4-i1) protein. The invention is also directed to methods of monitoring the progression of conditions marked by an impairment of myelin formation in the CNS comprising assessing the levels or activity of IL4-i1 in activated macrophages obtained from the subject.
Claims20
A method of promoting myelin formation in central nervous system (CNS) tissue in a subject in need thereof, the method comprising administering to the subject a therapeutically effective amount of interleukin-4 induced gene 1 (IL4-i1) protein.
A method of slowing the progression of the impairment of myelin regeneration in central nervous system (CNS) tissue in a subject in need thereof, the method comprising administering to the subject a therapeutically effective amount of interleukin-4 induced gene 1 (IL4-i1) protein.
A method of treating a subject with multiple sclerosis or other condition marked by an impairment of myelin regeneration in the central nervous system (CNS) in need of treatment thereof, the method comprising administering to the subject a therapeutically effective amount of a pharmaceutical composition comprising interleukin-4 induced gene 1 (IL4-i1) protein.
A method of diagnosing a subject as having a predisposition to having a condition marked by impairment of myelin regeneration in the central nervous system (CNS), the method comprising determining activity or levels of interleukin-4 induced gene 1 (IL4-i1) protein in the subject, wherein a reduction in the activity or levels of IL4-i1 in the subject is indicative that the subject has a predisposition to having a condition marked by demyelination or an impairment of myelin regeneration.
A method of monitoring the progression in a subject of a condition marked by impairment of myelin regeneration in central nervous system (CNS) tissue and/or axonal loss, the method comprising determining for at least two time points activity levels of interleukin-4 induced gene 1 (IL4-i1) protein in the subject, wherein a reduction in the activity or levels of IL4-i1 in the subject over time is indicative that the condition marked by an impairment of myelin regeneration is progressing in the subject and wherein an increase in the activity or levels of IL4-i1 in the subject over time is indicative that the condition marked by an impairment of myelin regeneration is regressing in the subject.
