A bioactive composite, comprising:
- a homogeneous mixture of a polyaryletherketone polymer and
- alkali-containing bioactive glass particles,
- wherein the polyaryletherketone polymer has a particle size of from 1,000 μm to 4,000 μm and is present in an amount of 70% to 80% by weight of the composite, and wherein the alkali-containing bioactive glass particles have a particle size range from 1 μm to 500 μm and are present in an amount of 20% to 30% by weight of the composite.
A homogeneous bioactive shaped body prepared by heating homogeneous pellets of polyaryletherketone polymer and alkali-containing bioactive glass particles and injection molding the homogeneous pellets to form the homogenous bioactive shaped body, wherein the polyaryletherketone polymer has a particle size of from 1,000 μm to 4,000 μm, a molecular weight ranging from 100,000 to 120,000 Daltons, and is present in an amount of 70% to 80% by weight of the shaped body, and wherein the bioactive glass particles have a particle size range from 1 μm to 500 μm and are present in an amount of 20% to 30% by weight of the shaped body,
- wherein the homogeneous pellets are prepared by heating polyaryletherketone polymer particles to at least partially melt the polyaryletherketone polymer particles, mixing the at least partially melted polyaryletherketone polymer particles, adding the alkali-containing bioactive glass particles to the at least partially melted and mixed polyaryletherketone polymer particles, and extruding homogeneous pellets.
A method of preparing a homogeneous bioactive shaped body, comprising:
- a) heating polyaryletherketone polymer particles to at least the melting temperature of the polyaryletherketone polymer to at least partially melt the polyaryletherketone polymer particles,
- wherein the polyaryetherketone polymer particles has a particle size of from 1,000 μm to 4,000 μm prior to heating and a molecular weight ranging from 100,000 to 120,000 Daltons prior to heating;
- b) mixing the at least partially melted polyaryletherketone polymer particles;
- c) adding bioactive glass particles to the at least partially melted and mixed polyaryletherketone polymer particles,
- wherein the bioactive glass particles have a particle size range from 1 μm to 500 μm, and
- d) extruding homogeneous pellets of polyaryletherketone polymer and alkali-containing bioactive glass particles, wherein the polyaryletherketone polymer is present in an amount of 70% to 80% by weight of the homogeneous pellets, and wherein the bioactive glass particles are present in an amount of 20% to 30% by weight of the homogeneous pellets;
- and
- e) injection molding the homogeneous pellets to form the homogeneous bioactive shaped body.
