Abstract
A fault current limiter (FCL) includes at least one magnetisable core member and at least one AC magnetomotive force source configured to generate a varying magnetic flux in at least a portion of the at least one magnetisable core member. At least one static magnetomotive force source is positioned to provide a magnetic circuit within at least part of the at least one magnetisable core member and the AC magnetomotive force source and the static magnetomotive force source are relatively positioned to be orthogonal to each other. Typically the static magnetomotive force source may be a permanent magnet and the AC magnetomotive force source configured to generate a varying magnetic flux in both of first and second spaced core members.

A fault current limiter comprising:
- first and second ring cores;
- and
- a series of permanent magnets sandwiched between the first and second ring cores, wherein the series of permanent magnets are punctuated by air gaps.
A fault current limiter comprising:
- a first central magnetic core of a first thickness;
- and
- first and second outer magnetic cores of a second thickness;
- a first series of permanent magnets;
- and
- a second series of permanent magnets;
- wherein the first central magnetic core and the first outer magnetic core sandwich the first series of permanent magnets;
- wherein the first central magnetic core and the second outer magnetic core sandwich the second series of permanent magnets;
- wherein each of the first and second series of permanent magnets are punctuated by air gaps;
- and
- wherein the first thickness is twice the second thickness.
A fault current limiter comprising:
- a plurality of permanent magnets sandwiched between first and second magnetic ring cores, wherein adjacent permanent magnets are in contact with one another and the magnetic moments of adjacent permanent magnets are in first and second opposing directions;
- and
- an AC coil wound around the first and second magnetic ring cores.
