Abstract
A downhole sensing method includes modulating light to form a soliton that propagates through an optical fiber acting as a sensing element that measures a downhole parameter. The method further includes obtaining scattered light created as the soliton propagates through the optic-fiber. The method further includes determining a value for a downhole parameter based on the scattered light, and displaying a representation of the value.
Claims20
A downhole sensing method, comprising:
- modulating light to form a soliton that propagates through an optical fiber acting as a sensing element that measures a downhole parameter;
- obtaining scattered light created as the soliton propagates through the optical fiber;
- determining a value for a downhole parameter based on the scattered light;
- and
- displaying a representation of the value.

A downhole sensing system, comprising:
- modulation equipment that modulates light to form a soliton;
- optical fiber coupled to the modulation equipment;
- a processing unit, coupled to the optical fiber, that determines a value for a downhole parameter based on scattered light created as the soliton propagates through the optical fiber.
A downhole sensing system, comprising:
- modulation equipment that modulates light to form a soliton;
- optical fiber coupled to the modulation equipment;
- point sensors coupled to the optical fiber;
- a processing unit, coupled to the optical fiber, that determines a value for a downhole parameter at a location of at least one point sensor.
