A modified microorganism for production of carnosine and beta-alanine comprising at least one heterologous enzyme selected from the group consisting of aspartate decarboxylase, carnosine synthase, and PanD autocleavage accelerator.
A non-naturally occurring microbial organism having a carnosine pathway and comprising at least one heterologous enzyme expressed in a sufficient amount to produce carnosine, wherein said carnosine pathway comprises (i) an enzyme that converts aspartate to beta-alanine and (ii) an enzyme that converts beta-alanine to carnosine.
