Abstract
In one embodiment, a less lethal munition including a ring airfoil projectile. The flight trajectory of the projectile has increased accuracy resulting from the aerodynamic stabilization of the projectile. In some embodiments, the projectile is both aerodynamically stabilized and spin stabilized.
Claims15
A munition for weapon, comprising:
- a projectile including a wall surrounding an inner flowpath and a centerline, the wall being symmetric about the centerline, the wall having an outer surface, an inner surface defining the boundary of flowpath, and a cross-sectional shape, the inner surface being more cambered than the inner surface;
- a support member for positioning the projectile within the weapon, and
- a source of pressurized gas for propelling the projectile;
- wherein the release of said source propels said projectile out of the weapon.
1 more element
A method for launching a ring airfoil projectile, comprising:
- providing a ring-shaped projectile having and outer diameter, the wall of the projectile having the cross-sectional shape of an airfoil, the projectile having a center of gravity, the projectile having an aerodynamic center of pressure;
- propelling the projectile within the weapon;
- spinning the projectile as it travels within the weapon;
- and
- aerodynamically stabilizing the projectile by placing the center of pressure behind the center of gravity.
2 more elements
A munition for a weapon, comprising:
- a projectile including a wall surrounding an inner flowpath and a centerline, the wall being symmetric about the centerline, the wall having an outer surface, an inner surface defining the boundary of flowpath, and a cross-sectional shape, the inner surface being more cambered than the inner surface;
- a support member for positioning the projectile within the weapon, and
- a source of pressurized gas for propelling the projectile;
- wherein release of said source of said charge propels said projectile out the weapon.
