Abstract
A head gasket is provided for use in an engine having a cylinder head and a cylinder liner with a side wall defining a combustion chamber, the cylinder liner including a liner flange projecting from the side wall in an outward direction away from the combustion chamber. The head gasket includes a main body layer and a flange layer coupled to the main body layer by a flange wrap portion. The flange wrap portion is sized for axial alignment with the side wall of the cylinder liner, and the flange layer is spaced from the main body layer to define a gap between the main body layer and the flange layer adjacent the flange wrap portion. A core layer is coupled to the main body layer and includes a sealing bead spaced outwardly from the flange wrap portion and sized for axial alignment with the liner flange.

A head gasket for use in an engine having a cylinder head and a cylinder liner having a side wall defining a combustion chamber, the cylinder liner including a liner flange projecting from the side wall in an outward direction away from the combustion chamber, the head gasket comprising:
- a main body layer;
- a flange layer coupled to the main body layer by a flange wrap portion, the flange wrap portion being sized for axial alignment with the side wall of the cylinder liner, the flange layer being spaced from the main body layer to define a gap between the main body layer and the flange layer adjacent the flange wrap portion;
- and
- a core layer coupled to the main body layer and including a sealing bead spaced outwardly from the flange wrap portion and sized for axial alignment with the liner flange.
An engine comprising:
- a cylinder head;
- a cylinder liner having a side wall defining a combustion chamber and a liner flange projecting from the side wall in an outward direction away from the combustion chamber;
- and
- a head gasket disposed between the cylinder head and the cylinder liner, the head gasket including:
- a main body layer;
- a flange layer coupled to the main body layer by a flange wrap portion, the flange wrap portion being sized for axial alignment with the side wall of the cylinder liner, the flange layer being spaced from the main body layer to define a gap between the main body layer and the flange layer adjacent the flange wrap portion;
- and
- a core layer coupled to the main body layer and including a sealing bead spaced outwardly from the flange wrap portion and sized for axial alignment with the liner flange.
A head gasket for use in an engine having a cylinder head and a cylinder liner, the cylinder liner including a side wall having a width and defining a combustion chamber having a bore diameter, and a liner flange projecting from the side wall in an outward direction away from the combustion chamber, the head gasket comprising:
- a main body layer;
- a flange layer coupled to the main body layer by a flange wrap portion, the flange wrap portion having a wrap exterior surface defining a flange wrap diameter equal to the bore diameter of the combustion chamber, so that the flange wrap portion is axially aligned with the side wall of the cylinder liner, the flange layer being spaced from the main body layer to define a gap between the main body layer and the flange layer adjacent the flange wrap portion, the gap having a length greater than the width of the side wall of the cylinder liner;
- and
- a core layer coupled to the main body layer and including a sealing bead spaced outwardly from the flange wrap portion and sized for axial alignment with the liner flange.
