Abstract
An adhesive composition having two distinct reaction mechanisms, a first being the reaction between a tri-functional isocyanate and an active hydrogen compound and a second begin the free radical initiation of an acrylic monomer. This adhesive develops tack strength through the first reaction allowing two substrates to remain in position relative to one another while the free radical cure of the acrylic monomer takes place to fully bond the substrates together, for example when adhering a rubber liner to the inside of a metallic tank.
Claims20
An adhesive comprising an acrylate monomer, a tri-functional isocyanate, an active hydrogen compound and a free radical initiator.
A method of bonding a vulcanized elastomer comprising the steps of:
- a) providing an adhesive comprising an acrylate monomer, a tri-functional isocyanate, an active hydrogen compound and a free radical initiator;
- b) depositing the adhesive on at least one of a vulcanized elastomer surface or a rigid substrate surface;
- c) allowing the adhesive to partially cure through the isocyanate reacting with active hydrogen containing compounds to develop an initial strength;
- d) bringing the elastomer substrate and the rigid substrate together with the adhesive disposed therebetween;
- and,
- e) allowing the acrylate in the adhesive to cure and bond the elastomer and rigid substrate together to produce a bonded structure.
