Abstract
Methods, apparatuses and systems for detecting defective sectors on a recording medium, the method including calculating a servo gain for each servo sector of a track of a recording medium of a storage device; determining whether the servo gain of each servo sector exceeds a threshold value; and upon determining that the servo gain of a servo sector exceeds the threshold value, determining data sectors included in the servo sector to be defective sectors.
Claims20
A defective sector detector of a storage device comprising a first servo gain calculator configured to calculate a servo gain for a servo sector on a track of a recording medium of the storage device and a defective sector determination unit configured to:
- receive the servo gain for the servo sector from the first servo gain calculator;
- determine whether the servo gain exceeds a threshold value;
- and
- upon determining that the servo gain exceeds the threshold value, output information indicating a plurality of data sectors included in the servo sector to be defective sectors.
A method comprising steps of:
- calculating a servo gain for each servo sector of a track of a recording medium of a storage device;
- determining whether the servo gain of each servo sector exceeds a threshold value;
- and
- upon determining that the servo gain of a servo sector exceeds the threshold value, determining data sectors included in the servo sector to be defective sectors.
A storage device comprising:
- a recording medium comprising a plurality of tracks, each of the plurality of tracks comprising one or more servo sectors;
- a media interface which writes information to, or reads information from, the recording medium by accessing the recording medium;
- a processor which controls the media interface to write data to, or read data from, a target track of the recording medium;
- and
- a memory containing code objects configured to cause the processor to
- calculate a servo gain for each servo sector of the target track,
- determine whether the servo gain of each servo sector exceeds a threshold value, and
- upon determining that the servo gain of a servo sector exceeds the threshold value, determine data sectors included in the servo sector to be defective sectors.
