Abstract
Systems and methods are disclosed for calculating and utilizing a variable CPU weighting factor for host configuration optimization in a data center environment. According to one illustrative embodiment, implementations may utilize actual workload profiles to generate variable CPU weighting factor(s) to optimize host configurations.

A method for optimizing host configurations in a data center, the method comprising:
- obtaining a list of hosts and clusters in the data center;
- for each host:
- querying each device for memory and central processor unit (CPU) configuration information;
- calculating virtual machine capacity (VM capacity) and a CPU variable weighting factor, Wf;
- and
- updating a configuration management database (CMDB) with the new VM capacity and the CPU variable weighting factor, Wf;
- once VM capacity and the variable weighting factor have been calculated for all hosts, calculating the VM capacity for every cluster;
- and
- processing information to update the data center with the calculated VM capacities.
A method for determining optimal memory configuration for hosts in the hosts' respective compute clusters based on current workloads in existence on each compute cluster, the method comprising:
- querying existing hosts in each compute cluster to determine a respective workload for each compute cluster;
- assigning all virtual machines in a first compute cluster to a first set (a) regardless of operating system and/or applications installed on the virtual machines;
- calculating a variable weighting factor, Wf, according to:

A method for optimizing workload allocation amount computer clusters, the method comprising:
- assigning all virtual machines in a first compute cluster of a first processor class, γ, and a first workload class, φ, into a first data set (α, β) and calculating a first variable weighting factor, Wf, relating to the first workload class, φ;
- assigning all virtual machines in the first compute cluster of the first processor class, γ, and a second workload class, θ, into a second data set (α′, β′) and calculating a second variable weighting factor, Wf′, relating to the second workload class, θ;
- assigning all virtual machines in a second compute cluster of the first processor class, γ, and the first workload class, φ, into a third data set (α″, β″) and calculating a third variable weighting factor, Wf″, relating to the first workload class, φ;
- assigning all virtual machines in the second compute cluster of the first processor class, γ, and the second workload class, θ, into a fourth data set (α′″, β′″) and calculating a fourth variable weighting factor, Wf′″, relating to the second workload class, θ;
- and
- assigning workloads to optimal compute cluster based on the calculated weighting factors and current configurations.
