System and method for determining a location for a device in a communication network

A method of identifying location data for a wireless access point device managing communications for an 802.11-class network, said method comprising:

• extracting first location data from a first transmission received from a client device in said network;
• identifying a location for said access point by analyzing at least said first location data;
• updating data in said server device with said location;
• identifying a communication transmission range for said location for said access point;
• and
• configuring communications generated by said access point to conform to said communication transmission range.

A wireless communication device for processing communications from a plurality of wireless devices in a wireless network, said device comprising:

• a communication module to process communications of a plurality of devices communication with said wireless device through said wireless network;
• a location module to determine a location to be associated with said device based on data provided to it;
• and
• a communication management module to process communications received from said network, to extract location data received in said communications, to provide said location data to said location module and to configure communications generated by said device according to a communication transmission range associated with said location data.
