Abstract
A safety system with a number of component devices that may be used alone or in combination to substantially reduce the risk of injury to the operator of the power cutting tool. The devices are designed for use with table saws, miter saws, jointers, routers, shapers and similar equipment. The devices secure a work piece against unanticipated movement and kickback while simultaneously protecting the operator's hands. The devices further enhance the capabilities of power equipment to make precise cuts safer, faster and easier. According to aspects of the present disclosure, one such device includes a guide member for engaging a work piece and an adjustable alignment member for orienting the position of the guide member relative to a cutting blade.
Claims15
A safety device for use with a miter saw to hold a work piece during a cutting operation, comprising:
- a. a body having a first end and a second end, and an upper surface and a lower surface;
- b. a safety wall extending from the upper surface of the body and disposed proximate the second end;
- c. a guide member extending from the lower surface of the body, the guide member disposed proximate the second end and having a first surface configured to engage a work piece;
- and
- d. an alignment plate positionable relative to the body, the alignment plate having a first edge configured to abut a guide rail associated with the miter saw, wherein repositioning the first edge of the alignment plate relative to the body repositions the first surface of the guide member.
A safety device for use with a powered cutting tool having a rotating cutting blade and a work piece supporting surface, comprising:
- a. a body having at least a first edge and a second edge, and a first surface and a second surface;
- b. a positioning arm extending from the body, the positioning arm having a distal end;
- c. an aperture disposed in the positioning arm, wherein the aperture is adapted to receive a securing member to fix the position of the body relative to the supporting surface;
- d. a safety wall extending from the upper surface of the body;
- e. a guide member subtending the lower surface of the body and spaced from the second end, the guide member having first surface configured to engage a work piece;
- and
- f. alignment means for aligning the first surface of the guide member relative to the cutting blade.
