Abstract
A joint for a vehicle can direct forces away from an interior of the vehicle and along a frame rail. The joint can pivot when subjected to a high force, and the pivoting action can redirect and redistribute the force away from a passenger compartment. The joint can comprise multiple pivot points.
Claims20
A scalable vehicle frame for a vehicle, the scalable vehicle frame comprising:
- an underbody including:
- a first transition section, a second transition section, a third transition section and a fourth transition section,
- wherein:
- the first transition section is coupled to the second transition section via a first scalable center frame section,
- the third transition section is coupled to the fourth transition section via a second scalable center frame section,
- the first transition section is coupled to the third transition section via a first scalable cross member, and
- the second transition section is coupled to the fourth transition section via a second scalable cross member;
- and
- an upper body including:
- a first scalable mounting rail coupled to the first scalable center frame section;
- and
- a second scalable mounting rail coupled to the second scalable center frame section,
- wherein:
- a length of the vehicle frame is adjustable based on adjustment of the first scalable center frame section, the second scalable center frame section, the first scalable mounting rail and the second scalable mounting rail, and
- a width of the vehicle frame is adjustable based on adjustment of the first scalable cross member and the second scalable cross member.

A joint for a vehicle, the joint comprising:
- a body member configured to:
- be coupled to a vehicle underbody at a first mounting point and at a second mounting point, the first and second mounting points comprising first and second pivot points, respectively, for the body member,
- be coupled to a vehicle rail at one or more locations other than the first and second mounting points, and
- when a force is applied to the body member, pivot at one of the first pivot point and the second pivot point depending on a location or a direction of the force, the pivoting at least partially transferring the force to the vehicle rail.

A scalable vehicle frame for a vehicle, the scalable vehicle frame comprising:
- an underbody including:
- a front-left transition section, a rear-left transition section, a front-right transition section and a rear-right transition section,
- wherein:
- the front-left transition section is coupled to the rear-left transition section via a left scalable center frame section,
- the front-right transition section is coupled to the rear-right transition section via a right scalable center frame section,
- the front-left transition section is coupled to the front-right transition section via a first lower scalable cross member and a first upper scalable cross member,
- the rear-left transition section is coupled to the rear-right transition section via a second lower scalable cross member and a second upper scalable cross member, and
- the left scalable center frame section, the right scalable center frame section, the first lower scalable cross member and the second lower scalable cross member define a cavity for a battery of the vehicle;
- a front crumple zone coupled to the front-left transition section and the front-right transition section;
- and
- a rear crumple zone coupled to the rear-left transition section and the rear-right transition section;
- and
- an upper body including:
- a left scalable mounting rail coupled to the left scalable center frame section via a first front-left mounting joint and a first rear-left mounting joint;
- and
- a right scalable mounting rail coupled to the right scalable center frame section via a second front-right mounting joint and a second rear-right mounting joint,
- wherein:
- a length of the vehicle frame is adjustable based on adjustment of the left scalable center frame section, the right scalable center frame section, the left scalable mounting rail and the right scalable mounting rail, and
- a width of the vehicle frame is adjustable based on adjustment of the first upper scalable cross member, the first lower scalable cross member, the second upper scalable cross member and the second lower scalable cross member.
