Methods and apparatuses for remodeling tissue of or adjacent to a body passage

A method of treatment comprising:

• (a) inserting a catheter into a renal artery of a patient, the catheter comprising:
• (i) an expandable balloon coupled to the catheter and including an outer surface;
• and
• (ii) at least one flexible circuit mounted on the outer surface of the expandable balloon, the at least one flexible circuit including:
• (1) a first insulating layer, (2) at least one heat sensing method positioned at least partially within the first insulating layer, (3) a conductive layer above the first insulating layer, at least a portion of which is electrically coupled to the heat sensing method, (4) a second insulating layer above the conductive layer, and (5) at least one electrode associated with the conductive layer;
• (b) expanding the balloon in the renal artery;
• and
• (c) driving energy through the at least one electrode so as to therapeutically affect one nerve proximate the renal artery.

A method of treatment comprising:

• (a) inserting a catheter into a body lumen of a patient, the catheter comprising:
• (i) an expandable balloon coupled to the catheter and including an outer surface;
• and
• (ii) at least one flexible circuit mounted on the outer surface of the expandable balloon, the at least one flexible circuit including:
• (1) a first insulating layer, (2) at least one heat sensing method positioned at least partially within the first insulating layer, (3) a conductive layer layered on top of the first insulating layer, at least a portion of which is electrically coupled to the heat sensing method, (4) a second insulating layer layered on top of the conductive layer, and (5) a first plurality of electrodes layered on top of the second insulating layer;
• (b) expanding the balloon in the body lumen;
• and
• (c) driving energy through the plurality of electrodes to at least one nerve proximate the body lumen.

A method of treatment comprising:

• (a) inserting a catheter into a renal artery of a patient, the catheter comprising:
• (i) an expandable balloon coupled to the catheter and including an outer surface;
• and
• (ii) at least one flexible circuit mounted on the outer surface of the expandable balloon, the at least one flexible circuit including:
• (1) first and second insulating layers, (2) at least one heat sensing method positioned between the insulating layers, (3) a conductive layer positioned between the insulating layers and electrically coupled to the heat sensing method, and (4) a plurality of electrodes on top of the second insulating layer;
• (b) expanding the balloon in the renal artery;
• and
• (c) delivering energy from the plurality of electrodes so as to alter at least one nerve proximate the renal artery.
