## Abstract

A valve comprises a first housing including a first lumen extending therethrough and defining a first disk-facing surface and a second housing including a second lumen extending therethrough and defining a second disk-facing surface, the second housing being mated to the first housing so that the second disk-facing surface faces the first disk-facing surface in combination with a flexible disk gripped between gripping portions of the first and second disk-facing surfaces, the disk including a slit extending therethrough which, when acted upon by a fluid pressure of at least a predetermined threshold level opens to permit fluid flow between the first and second lumens and which, when acted upon by a fluid pressure less than the threshold level remains sealed preventing fluid flow between the first and second lumens and a relief well between opposing portions of the first and second housings radially outside the gripping portions, a width of the relief well exceeding a width of a radially outer portion of the flexible disk so that the radially outer portion of the disk is free to move therewithin.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A device to provide access to the vascular system of a patient, said device comprising:
a valve component, said valve component comprising:
a first mateable housing portion, said first mateable housing portion including a first protrusion and a first recess, the first recess radially outward from the first protrusion;
a second mateable housing portion, said second mateable housing portion including a second protrusion and a second recess, the second recess radially outward from the second protrusion;
a flexible member, said flexible member situated between the first mateable housing portion and the second mateable housing portion, said flexible member comprising at least one slit configured to open under a threshold fluid pressure, said flexible member including a radially outer portion extending radially outward from the first protrusion and the second protrusion when the first mateable housing portion and the second mateable housing portion are mated together, wherein the first protrusion and the second protrusion contact said flexible member when the first mateable housing portion and the second mateable housing portion are mated together and allow at least part of the radially outer portion of said flexible member to flex in at least one of the first recess or the second recess; and
a catheter in fluid communication with said valve component.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The device of claim 1, wherein the first protrusion faces the second protrusion when the first mateable housing portion and the second mateable housing portion are mated together.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The device of claim 1, wherein the first protrusion aligns along a longitudinal axis with the second protrusion when the first mateable housing portion and the second mateable housing portion are mated together.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The device of claim 1, wherein the first recess faces the second recess when the first mateable housing portion and the second mateable housing portion are mated together.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The device of claim 1, wherein the first recess aligns along a longitudinal axis with the second recess when the first mateable housing portion and the second mateable housing portion are mated together.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The device of claim 1, wherein the first mateable housing portion includes a third recess, the third recess being radially inward from the first protrusion.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The device of claim 1, wherein the second mateable housing portion includes a fourth recess, the fourth recess being radially inward from the second protrusion.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The device of claim 1, wherein the third recess faces the fourth recess when the first mateable housing portion and the second mateable housing portion are mated together, a portion of said flexible member allowed to flex in at least the third recess or the fourth recess.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The device of claim 1, wherein the third recess aligns with the fourth recess when the first mateable housing portion and the second mateable housing portion are mated together, a portion of said flexible member allowed to flex in at least the third recess or the fourth recess.
