## Abstract

An intravascular balloon catheter device is disclosed having an inner member, an outer member disposed about the inner member and further comprising a balloon. A sheath is disposed about the outer member that moves relative to the balloon so as to selectively expose some or all of the balloon for inflation. A clamp may be used to selectively secure the sheath at a desired position relative to the balloon. A balloon recapture element may permit incremental adjustment to the balloon length and facilitate balloon recapture.

## Claims

### Claim 1

An intravascular balloon catheter device comprising:
an inner member;
an outer member disposed about the inner member and comprising a balloon;
a sheath disposed about the outer member adapted for movement relative to the balloon so as to selectively expose some or all of the balloon for inflation;
a clamp configured to selectively secure the sheath at a desired position relative to the balloon; and
a balloon recapture element.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The device of claim 1 wherein:
the balloon recapture element comprises a tapered edge on the distal end of the sheath.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The device of claim 1 wherein:
the balloon recapture element comprises a smoothed edge on the distal end of the sheath.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The device of claim 1 wherein:
the balloon recapture element comprises a funnel-shaped tip located on the distal end of the sheath.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The device of claim 1 wherein:
the balloon recapture element comprises a diametrically enlarged section located on the distal end of the sheath.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The device of claim 1 wherein:
the balloon recapture element comprises rifling located on the inner surface of the sheath.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The device of claim 6 wherein:
the balloon recapture element further comprises at least one pleat located on the outer surface of the balloon; and
the pleats are configured to mate with the rifling.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The device of claim 7 wherein:
the rifling is spiral shaped.

### Claim 9 (depends on 7)

The device of claim 7 wherein:
the rifling extends in straight lines parallel with the center line of the sheath.

### Claim 10 (depends on 6)

The device of claim 6 further comprising:
a mechanical stop configured to prevent the balloon from fully escaping the sheath.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The device of claim 10 wherein:
the rifling is configured to mate with the mechanical stop.

### Claim 12

An intravascular balloon catheter device comprising:
an outer member;
a balloon affixed to a distal end of the outer member and configured to move between an inflated and a deflated state;
an inner member disposed within the outer member;
a sheath disposed about the outer member configured for movement relative to the balloon so as to selectively expose some or all of the balloon for inflation;
a mechanical stop configured to prevent the balloon from fully escaping the sheath; and
a balloon recapture element.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The device of claim 12 wherein:
the balloon recapture element comprises a tapered edge on the distal end of the sheath.

### Claim 14 (depends on 12)

The device of claim 12 wherein:
the balloon recapture element comprises a smoothed edge on the distal end of the sheath.

### Claim 15 (depends on 12)

The device of claim 12 wherein:
the balloon recapture element comprises a funnel-shaped tip located on the distal end of the sheath.

### Claim 16 (depends on 12)

The device of claim 12 wherein:
the balloon recapture element comprises a diametrically enlarged section located on the distal end of the sheath.

the balloon recapture element further comprises at least one pleat located on the outer surface of the balloon; and
the pleats are configured to mate with the rifling.

### Claim 19 (depends on 12)

The device of claim 12 wherein:
the rifling is configured to mate with the mechanical stop.

### Claim 20

An intravascular balloon catheter device comprising:
an inner member;
an outer member disposed about the inner member and comprising a balloon having a plurality of pleats located on the outer surface thereof;
a sheath disposed about the outer member adapted for movement relative to the balloon so as to selectively expose some or all of the balloon for inflation, wherein said sheath comprises rifling on the inner surface of said sheath configured to mate with the pleats, and a funnel-shaped tip on the distal end of the sheath, said funnel-shaped tip having a smoothed or tapered distal edge configured to facilitate resheathing of the balloon;
