## Abstract

A system and method for communicating data from a medical device to a lighting device is provided. The system may include the medical device, the lighting device, and/or one or more interface devices. The medical device may be configured to transmit data to the lighting device, which for example, may include information relating to the medical device, dosage information, diagnostic data, medical device training feedback, health monitoring information, and/or air quality information. The lighting device may be configured to receive data from the medical device and control one or more lighting characteristics based on the received data. A characteristic of the light may include one or more of color, color temperature, intensity, flashing or steady-state, on or off, and/or the like. The system may provide for a home based adherence and/or compliance monitoring system, in which a patient's interaction with a medical device may be monitored and an alert/indication provided.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A system comprising:
a lighting device comprising a processor and a receiver; and
a medical device comprising a processor and a communication circuit, the medical device configured to transmit data to the lighting device;
wherein the lighting device is configured to receive the data and control a characteristic of light based on the received data.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the characteristic of the light is at least one of a color of the light, a color temperature of the light, an intensity of the light, whether the light is flashing or in a steady-state, or whether the light is on or off

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the characteristic of light is controlled to provide an alert or notification to a user, the alert or notification relating to the medical device.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The system of claim 3, wherein the alert or notification comprises one or more of a dose reminder, missed dose information, confirmation of proper operation of the medical device, patient coaching information, a use error, a tracking of inhalation flow, or patient wellness information.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the medical device configured to wirelessly transmit the data to the lighting device using at least one of Bluetooth, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), Wi-Fi, ZigBee, or Thread.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the medical device comprises one or more of an injectable medication device, a pill container, or an inhaler.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the lighting device is configured to provide conventional room lighting and configured to control the characteristic of the light based on the received data.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, further comprising:
an interface device comprising a processor and a transceiver, the interface device configured to receive the data from the medical device and transmit the data to the lighting device.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The system of claim 8, wherein the interface device comprises one or more of a smartphone, a smart television, an HDMI dongle, a wearable device, a wireless router, a set-top box, or a bridge device.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the medical device and lighting device are in separate locations and the data is transmitted via the Internet.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the medical device is configured to determine the data based on an internal operating condition of the medical device, the internal operation condition comprising one or more of remaining battery life of the medical device, a remaining number of doses, or a dose error.

### Claim 12 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the medical device transmits the data based on an interaction of a user with the medical device.

### Claim 13 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the medical device is configured to transmit the data in real-time.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The system of claim 13, wherein:
the medical device is an inhaler;
the data is patient inhalation data; and
the lighting device is configured to change the characteristic of the light based on the results of a comparison between the patient inhalation data and target inhalation data stored in memory of the lighting device, the target inhalation data representing correct use of the medical device.

### Claim 15 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the medical device is configured to store information related to patient usage of the medical device, analyze the information related to the patient's usage over a period of time, and determine the data based on results of the analysis.

### Claim 16 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the medical device is configured to transmit the data to the lighting device upon a change in an environmental condition detected by the medical device, the environmental condition comprising at least one of temperature, humidity, carbon monoxide reading, a barometric pressure reading, or acceleration of the medical device.

### Claim 17

A medical device comprising:
a processor configured to:
receive an advertisement message from a lighting device;
send a connection message to the lighting device, the connection message establishing a connection between the lighting device and the medical device;
determine a user interaction with the medical device;
send a command to the lighting device, the command indicating that the lighting device change a characteristic of light output.

### Claim 18 (depends on 17)

The medical device of claim 17, wherein at least one of the advertisement message, the connection message, or the command are in encoded accordingly to the Generic Attribute Profile (GATT) protocol.

### Claim 19 (depends on 17)

The medical device of claim 17, wherein the command is sent to the lighting device in response to determining the user interaction with the medical device.

### Claim 20 (depends on 17)

The medical device of claim 17, wherein the characteristic of the light is at least one of a color of the light, a color temperature of the light, an intensity of the light, whether the light is flashing or in a steady-state, or whether the light is on or off
