Abstract
The invention relates to a brake, shear and cable management system and method for effectively braking and cutting cable from a rotatable drum, such as drilling line, boring line, electrical line, fiber optic line or the like. The brake, shear and cable management system includes a cable management assembly, a cable brake assembly and a cable cutting assembly used in conjunction to manage, retain and sever a spent portion of cable upon the drum.
Claims20
An assembly to manage, retain and sever a cable upon a rotatable drum, said assembly comprising:
- a plurality of crawler assemblies configured to engage an extended span of said cable;
- at least one of said crawler assemblies being movable with respect to another of said crawler assemblies;
- said crawler assemblies further comprising:
- an actively driven crawler assembly configured to engage a first side of said cable;
- and
- a passively driven crawler assembly configured to engage a second side of said cable;
- said passively driven crawler assembly positioned adjacent to said actively powered crawler assembly;
- a cable brake assembly configured to hold said cable;
- and
- a cable cutting assembly configured to sever said cable;
- said cable cutting assembly positioned adjacent to said crawler assemblies.
A method of managing, retaining and severing a spent portion of wire rope of a drawworks for an oil field drilling rig, said method comprising the steps of:
- managing said wire rope with a brake, shear and management assembly;
- said brake, shear and management assembly comprising a wire rope management assembly, a wire rope brake assembly and a wire rope cutting assembly;
- positioning an extended span of said wire rope intermediate of a pair of crawler assemblies of said wire rope management assembly;
- securely retaining said wire rope with said wire rope brake assembly;
- securely retaining said extended span of said wire rope with said crawler assemblies of said wire rope management assembly;
- and
- severing said wire rope with said wire rope cutting assembly.
