## Abstract

Systems and methods are provided for geo-fencing using a mobile device. In certain instances, the geo-function setting sets boundaries relating to when alerts may be presented to a user of the electronic device, or when an alert may be transmitted to another electronic device. A geo-function setting may relate a perimeter around a location, or may relate to a perimeter bracketing a pre-defined route traversed by a person carrying the electronic device. When the electronic device crosses a perimeter, an alert may be presented or transmitted according to the operating system setting. In other instances, a geo-function may be initiated though a user interface of the electronic device, and may relate to the learning of a route traversed by a person carrying the electronic device.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for controlling an electronic device, the method comprising:
receiving a setting that associates a geo-fence to a function at the electronic device, wherein the setting is an operating system setting that allows the function to be performed according to the setting when an application program is closed at the electronic device;
identifying that the electronic device is within a perimeter distance of the geo-fence;
accessing the application program according to an application program interface (API) at the electronic device;
passing a parameter between operating system program code and the application program according to the API; and
performing the function according to the setting after identifying that the electronic device is within the perimeter distance of the geo-fence.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the function is triggered by the application program.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the function is triggered by the operating system program code.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the perimeter distance is a temporal distance corresponding to an estimated time when the electronic device will cross the geo-fence.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The method of claim 4, further comprising identifying a velocity that the electronic device, wherein the temporal distance corresponds to the identified velocity of the electronic device.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the perimeter distance corresponds to a boundary of the geo-fence.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6, wherein the function performed includes sending a message to an external electronic device when the geo-fence boundary is crossed.

### Claim 8 (depends on 8)

The method of claim 8, wherein the message includes information that identifies at least one of:
a contact;
that the electronic device has crossed the geo-fence boundary;
an appointment corresponding to the geo-fence;
a safe place; and
a hazardous place.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the perimeter distance corresponds to a location where a beacon is received by the electronic device.

### Claim 10

A non-transitory computer readable storage medium for performing a method for controlling an electronic device, the method comprising:
receiving a setting that associates a geo-fence to a function at the electronic device, wherein the setting is an operating system setting that allows the function to be performed according to the setting when an application program is closed at the electronic device;
identifying that the electronic device is within a perimeter distance of the geo-fence;
accessing the application program according to an application program interface (API) at the electronic device;
passing a parameter between operating system program code and the application program according to the API; and
performing the function according to the setting after identifying that the electronic device is within the perimeter distance of the geo-fence;

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 10, wherein the function is triggered by the application program.

### Claim 12 (depends on 10)

The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 10, wherein the function is triggered by the operating system program code.

### Claim 13 (depends on 10)

The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 10, wherein the perimeter distance is a temporal distance corresponding to an estimated time when the electronic device will cross the geo-fence.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 13, the program further executable to identify a velocity that the electronic device, wherein the temporal distance corresponds to the identified velocity of the electronic device.

### Claim 15 (depends on 10)

The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 10, wherein the perimeter distance corresponds to a boundary of the geo-fence.

### Claim 16 (depends on 15)

The non-transitory computer readable storage medium d of claim 15, wherein the function performed includes sending a message to an external electronic device when the geo-fence boundary is crossed.

### Claim 17 (depends on 8)

The non-transitory computer readable storage of claim 8, wherein the message includes information that identifies at least one of:
a contact;
that the electronic device has crossed the geo-fence boundary;
an appointment corresponding to the geo-fence;
a safe place; and
a hazardous place.

### Claim 18 (depends on 1)

The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 1, wherein the perimeter distance corresponds to a location where a beacon is received by the electronic device.
