## Abstract

A firearm safety system and method is described herein. The system may include a tracking system, a smart firearm and/or a smart magazine, and a smart tracking unit. The tracking system is in communication with satellites that monitor specific locations, a smart firearm and a portable electronic device. The tracking system includes an internal geographical database of specific monitored locations. The smart firearm includes a microprocessor and a receiver. The motor operates in response to a signal received, which may indicate that the firearm is approaching a no gun safety zone, whereby the signal causes the microprocessor to operate the automatic safety lock to prevent the apparatus from operating. The receiver monitors signals and receives location data from the satellites. The method of operating a smart firearm includes receiving a signal at the at least one receiver and responding to the signal by locking the automatic safety lock.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A firearm safety apparatus comprising:
a gun frame;
a trigger;
a striker operatively connected with the trigger and being responsive to an operation of the trigger to selectively contact an associated bullet communicated to the gun frame thereby shooting the associated bullet from the gun frame;
a microprocessor coupled with the gun frame;
a receiver in operative communication with the microprocessor, wherein the receiver is configured to receive a first signal from an associated safety tracking system signal source;
a safety lock in communication with the microprocessor, wherein the safety lock is responsive to the receiver receiving the first signal from the associated safety tracking system signal source to prevent the striker from operating thereby preventing the shooting of the associated bullet from the gun frame; and
a portable electronic device in operative communication with the receiver and with the associated safety tracking system signal source, the portable electronic device being configured to operate the safety lock to selectively permit or prevent the striker from operating.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The firearm safety apparatus of claim 1, wherein one or more of the receiver and/or the portable electronic device is configured to receive location data as the first signal from at least one associated satellite.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The firearm safety apparatus of claim 2, further comprising:
a geographical database storing safety perimeter data corresponding to coordinates of one or more predetermined designated areas,
wherein the microprocessor is operative to compare the location data from the at least one associated satellite with the safety perimeter data and determine a location of the firearm safety apparatus relative to the one or more predetermined designated areas,
wherein the microprocessor is operative to determine whether the firearm safety apparatus is within any of the one or more predetermined designated areas, and
wherein the microprocessor is configured to generate a safety zone signal in response to the microprocessor determining the firearm safety apparatus is within any of the one or more predetermined designated areas.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The firearm safety apparatus of claim 3, wherein:
the safety lock is configured to selectively prevent the striker from operating thereby preventing the shooting of the associated bullet from the gun frame in response to the microprocessor generating the safety zone signal.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The firearm safety apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:
a geographical database disposed on the portable electronic device, the geographical database storing safety perimeter data corresponding to coordinates of one or more predetermined designated areas;
wherein the portable electronic device is operative to determine whether it is within any of the one or more predetermined designated areas, and
wherein the portable electronic device is configured to generate a safety zone signal in response to the determining the portable electronic device is within any of the one or more predetermined designated areas.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The firearm safety apparatus of claim 5, wherein the portable electronic device is a mobile smart phone.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The firearm safety apparatus of claim 1, wherein:
the receiver is operative to receive an unlock command signal from the portable electronic device responsive to an associated user of the portable electronic device providing pass code date to the portable electronic device;
the microprocessor is configured to determine an authenticity of the pass code data; and
the safety lock is configured to selectively permit the striker to operate thereby permitting the shooting of the associated bullet from the gun frame in response to a result of the microprocessor determining the authenticity of the pass code data received by the receiver from the portable electronic device.

### Claim 8

A firearm safety apparatus for use with an associated firearm device including a gun frame, a trigger, a striker operatively connected with the trigger and being responsive to an operation of the trigger to selectively contact an associated bullet communicated to the gun frame thereby shooting the associated bullet from the gun frame, a magazine frame, and a feed member configured to selectively communicate an associated bullet to the gun frame of the associated firearm device, the firearm safety apparatus comprising:
a microprocessor;
a receiver in operative communication with the microprocessor, wherein the receiver is configured to receive a first signal from an associated safety tracking system signal source;
a safety lock in communication with the microprocessor, wherein the safety lock is responsive to the receiver receiving the first signal from the associated safety tracking system signal source to prevent one or more of the striker from operating thereby preventing the shooting of the associated bullet from the gun frame and/or the feed member from communicating the associated bullet to the gun frame; and
a portable electronic device in operative communication with the receiver and with the associated safety tracking system signal source, the portable electronic device being configured to operate the safety lock to selectively permit or prevent the striker and/or the feed member from operating.
