## Abstract

Adjustable drill string housings are described for use in the directional drilling of wellbores, e.g. wellbores for hydrocarbon recovery wells. The adjustable drill string housings permit adjustment of a bend angle in the housings without removing the housings from a wellbore. In some exemplary embodiments, the bend angle can be adjusted by changing the internal stresses in a support member carried by the housings. In other embodiments, the bend angle may be adjusted by causing failure of sacrificial support members carried by the housings, and the failure may be caused by delivering chemicals through a chemical delivery system to the sacrificial support members. Methods of operating the adjustable drill string housings include multi-lateral drilling operations wherein the bend angle is adjusted when a casing window has been detected.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of forming a branch wellbore, comprising:
running a bottom hole assembly into a main wellbore on a drill string;
adjusting a bend angle, within the main wellbore, of an adjustable drill string housing defined by the bottom hole assembly to thereby induce a contact between the bottom hole assembly and a casing in the main wellbore;
moving the bottom hole assembly in contact with the casing to a window defined in the casing such that the contact is relieved;
detecting the relief of the contact;
altering the bend angle, subsequent to detecting the relief of the contact, to define a direction of the branch wellbore; and
commencing drilling the branch wellbore through the window in response to detecting the relief of the contact.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein adjusting the bend angle within the main wellbore comprises sending a signal to the bottom hole assembly that induces an adjustment mechanism on the bottom hole assembly to change an internal stress on at least one support member carried by the adjustable drill string housing.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein sending the signal to the bottom hole assembly induces an actuator to reversibly impart the internal stress on the at least one support member, and wherein the actuator comprises at least one of the group consisting of:
an electrically actuated motor;
a hydraulically actuated piston; and
a thermally actuated sleeve.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein altering the bend angle comprises inducing failure of at least one support member carried by the adjustable drill string housing.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The method of claim 4, wherein commencing drilling the branch wellbore comprises conveying a drilling fluid through the drill string, and wherein inducing failure of the at least one support member comprises inducing corrosion of the at least one support member in the drilling fluid.

### Claim 6 (depends on 4)

The method of claim 4, wherein inducing failure of at least one support member comprises providing an electric current to the at least one support member to accelerate galvanic corrosion of the at least one support member.

### Claim 7

A method of forming and operating an adjustable drill string housing to form a branch wellbore therewith, comprising:
providing an annular member defining an initial bend angle therein about a bend axis, the bend angle defined between upper and lower longitudinal axes extending through respective upper and lower ends of the annular member;
pre-stressing at least one support member on the annular member that is radially offset from the upper and lower longitudinal axes and extends across the bend axis to move the annular member to a first configuration wherein the upper and lower longitudinal axes are disposed at a first bend angle different from the initial bend angle;
running the annular member into a main wellbore on a drill string with the annular member in the first configuration;
locating a casing window in the main wellbore with a drill bit supported by the annular member in the first configuration;
triggering, with the drill bit extending through the casing window, a change in an internal stress in the at least one support member to thereby bend the annular member from the first configuration to a second configuration within the wellbore; and
rotating the drill bit with the annular member in the second configuration to form the branch wellbore.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7, wherein triggering the change in the internal stress comprises inducing failure in the at least one support member to relieve at least a portion of an internal pre stress maintained in the annular member by the at least one support member.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The method of claim 8, wherein inducing failure in the at least one support member comprises returning the annular member to the first configuration.

### Claim 10 (depends on 8)

The method of claim 8, wherein inducing failure in the at least one support member comprises inducing an electric current through the at least one support member and through a cathode member to accelerate galvanic corrosion of the at least one support member.

### Claim 11 (depends on 8)

The method of claim 8, further comprising operating an energy delivery system to deliver a fluid from an energy reservoir carried by the annular member to the at least one support member, to thereby accelerate failure of the at least one support member.

### Claim 12 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7, wherein locating the casing window comprises moving the drill bit in contact with a casing in which the casing window is defined, and detecting a change in resistance to the motion when the drill bit enters the casing window.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The method of claim 12, wherein moving the drill bit in contact with the casing comprises rotating the drill string about a longitudinal axis of the main wellbore.

### Claim 14 (depends on 12)

The method of claim 12, wherein running the annular member into the main wellbore comprises maintaining a lateral offset between the drill bit and the casing, and wherein the method further comprises adjusting the bend angle within the main wellbore to engage the casing with the drill bit prior to moving the drill bit in contact with the casing.

### Claim 15 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7, further comprising measuring the bend angle subsequent to triggering the change in the internal stress to thereby verify the bend in the annular member from the first configuration to the second configuration.

### Claim 16

A method of forming a branch wellbore, comprising:
running a bottom hole assembly into a main wellbore on a drill string;
adjusting a bend angle, within the main wellbore, of an adjustable drill string housing defined by the bottom hole assembly to thereby induce a contact between the bottom hole assembly and a casing in the main wellbore;
