Abstract
Embodiments of the present invention provide methods, computer program products, and systems for generating a shortest data path for data packets. Embodiments of the present invention can be used to exclude switches at or near their maximum capacity of flow entries from the shortest data path calculation. Embodiments of the present invention can be used to reduce the “lag time” users can experience while waiting for data packets to be forwarded through different switches.
Claims20
A method for generating a shortest data path, the method comprising:
- receiving, by one or more computer processors, from each particular switch of a plurality of switches in a network, a data packet comprising information indicating a respective maximum capacity of flow entries that can be installed on that particular switch;
- specifying, by one or more computer processors, for each particular switch of the plurality of switches, a threshold number of flow entries based on the respective maximum capacity of flow entries that can be installed on that particular switch;
- identifying, by one or more computer processors, one or more switches in the network having a number of installed flow entries that is greater than or equal to the respective threshold number of flow entries that can be installed;
- and
- excluding, by one or more computer processors, the identified one or more switches from a calculation of a shortest data path for a data packet through two or more of the plurality of switches.
A computer program product for generating a shortest data path comprising:
- one or more computer readable storage media and program instructions stored on the one or more computer readable storage media, the program instructions comprising:
- program instructions to receive from each particular switch of a plurality of switches in a network, a data packet comprising information indicating a respective maximum capacity of flow entries that can be installed on that particular switch;
- program instructions to specify for each particular switch of the plurality of switches, a threshold number of flow entries based on the respective maximum capacity of flow entries that can be installed on that particular switch;
- program instructions to identify one or more switches in the network having a number of installed flow entries that is greater than or equal to the respective threshold number of flow entries that can be installed;
- and
- program instructions to exclude the identified one or more switches from a calculation of a shortest data path for a data packet through two or more of the plurality of switches.
A computer system for generating a shortest data path comprising comprising:
- one or more computer processors;
- one or more computer readable storage media;
- and
- program instructions stored on the one or more computer readable storage media for execution by at least one of the one or more processors, the program instructions comprising:
- program instructions to receive from each particular switch of a plurality of switches in a network, a data packet comprising information indicating a respective maximum capacity of flow entries that can be installed on that particular switch;
- program instructions to specify for each particular switch of the plurality of switches, a threshold number of flow entries based on the respective maximum capacity of flow entries that can be installed on that particular switch;
- program instructions to identify one or more switches in the network having a number of installed flow entries that is greater than or equal to the respective threshold number of flow entries that can be installed;
- and
- program instructions to exclude the identified one or more switches from a calculation of a shortest data path for a data packet through two or more of the plurality of switches.
