## Abstract

The invention relates to a method and apparatus for control of a charged particle cancer therapy system. A treatment delivery control system is used to directly control multiple subsystems of the cancer therapy system without direct communication between selected subsystems, which enhances safety, simplifies quality assurance and quality control, and facilitates programming. For example, the treatment delivery control system directly controls one or more of: an imaging system, a positioning system, an injection system, a radio-frequency quadrupole system, a ring accelerator or synchrotron, an extraction system, a beam line, an irradiation nozzle, a gantry, a display system, a targeting system, and a verification system. Generally, the control system integrates subsystems and/or integrates output of one or more of the above described cancer therapy system elements with inputs of one or more of the above described cancer therapy system elements.

## Claims

### Claim 1

An apparatus for treating a tumor of a patient using positively charged particles, comprising:
a tomography imaging system; and
a treatment delivery control system configured to control a plurality of sub-systems of a cancer therapy system, said plurality of sub-systems comprising:
an accelerator system;
an extraction system;
a beam transport line configured to transport the positively charged particles;
an irradiation nozzle; and
a gantry,
wherein a charged particle beam path sequentially passes through: at least part of said injector system, said accelerator system, said extraction system, said beam transport line, said irradiation nozzle, and at least part of said gantry,
wherein said tomography imaging system uses all of said accelerator system, said extraction system, said beam transport line, said irradiation nozzle;
and said gantry.

### Claim 2

A method for extracting a circulating charged particle beam from a synchrotron, comprising the steps of:
circulating the circulating charged particle beam about a center of said synchrotron, said synchrotron comprising a circulating beam pathlength, said circulating charged particle beam comprising a time period of circulation;
applying a radio-frequency across a first pair of blades to alter a circulating path of the circulating charged particle beam, said radio-frequency comprising a frequency time period;
said step of applying the radio-frequency inducing a particle beam undergoing a betatron oscillation, the betatron oscillation sufficient for the charged particle beam to strike an extraction material;
transmitting the particle beam undergoing betatron oscillation and striking said extraction material through said extraction material, said extraction material yielding a reduced energy charged particle beam;
passing the reduced energy charged particle beam passing between a second pair of blades;
applying at least five hundred volts across said second pair of blades, wherein said second pair of blades redirects the reduced energy charged particle beam to a deflector and out of said synchrotron yielding an extracted charged particle beam.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, further comprising the steps of:
calculating an energy of the circulating charged particle beam using the circulating beam pathlength and the frequency time period, said frequency time period comprising a periodic time equal to an integral multiple of the time period of circulation;
reducing the energy of the circulating charged particle beam by a value equal to energy lost upon said step of transmitting to yield an energy of the extracted charged particle beam.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The method of claim 3, said step of applying further comprising the step of:
controlling an intensity of the circulating charged particle beam striking the extraction material via controlling an amplitude of the radio-frequency.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The method of claim 4, the circulating charged particle beam comprising a positively charged particle beam.
