Abstract
A hybrid vehicle includes a fraction battery, a powertrain coupled to the battery, and a controller or a battery management system having a controller. The controller is programmed to set a state of charge (SOC) target for the battery according to losses associated with the powertrain and an angle of inclination of the vehicle. The controller is programmed to respond to a SOC of the battery and a speed of the vehicle. When the SOC is greater than the target and the speed is greater than a threshold the controller is programmed to discharge the battery to achieve the target.

A battery management system for a vehicle comprising:
- a battery;
- and
- a controller programmed to set a state of charge (SOC) target for the battery according to an angle of inclination and speed of the vehicle, and in response to a SOC of the battery being greater than the target and the speed being greater than a threshold, discharge the battery to achieve the target.
A method of operating a hybrid vehicle having a traction battery comprising:
- setting by a controller a state of charge (SOC) target for the battery according to an angle of inclination and a speed of the vehicle;
- and
- discharging the battery by the controller in response to a SOC of the battery being greater than the target and the speed being greater than a threshold.
A hybrid vehicle comprising:
- a traction battery;
- a powertrain coupled to the battery;
- and
- a controller programmed to set a state of charge (SOC) target for the battery according to losses associated with the powertrain and an angle of inclination of the vehicle, and in response to a SOC of the battery being greater than the target and a speed of the vehicle being greater than a threshold, discharge the battery to achieve the target.
