Abstract
Provided are pharmacological methods of inducing through a unified set of molecular mechanisms the maturation of stem cells, methods of promoting mitochondrial biogenesis in a cell and tissue, methods of reducing pluripotency in a stem cell, and methods of promoting differentiation of a stem cell. In particular, the invention relates to methods for promoting tissue growth and/or tissue repair and/or improving tissue survival, preventing and treating fibrotic lesions and disorders.

1-37. (canceled)
A method for treating or preventing fibrosis or fibrotic lesions, systemic inflammatory response syndrome, or sepsis or for promoting tissue growth and/or repair and/or improving cell/tissue survival in a subject, organ or tissue, said method comprising administering a Re-based CORM, a derivative thereof or a mixture thereof in a subject, organ or tissue in need thereof of an amount effective to induce mitochondrial biosynthesis, stimulate regeneration, and/or combat fibrosis.
A composition comprising a Re-based CORM, a derivative thereof or a mixture thereof combined with at least one co-agent useful in the promotion of tissue growth, repair or survival or useful in the improvement of cell survival, or useful in the treatment or prevention of fibrosis or fibrotic lesions.
A method of preparation of a cell composition for cell-based therapy comprising a step of contacting a cell with a Re-based CORM, a derivative thereof or a mixture thereof, wherein said cell is selected from a stem, a progenitor, a precursor, a totipotent, a pluripotent, a multipotent and an oligopotent cell.
A preservation or preparation medium for cells, organs or tissues comprising a Re-based CORM, a derivative thereof or a mixture thereof.
A method of inducing maturation of a stem, or a progenitor, or a precursor, or a totipotent, or a pluripotent, or a multipotent or an oligopotent cell, comprising inducing expression of heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) in said cell.
A method for enhancing the mitochondrial content in a cell, tissue, or subject, said method comprising contacting said cell, tissue, or subject in need thereof with a Re-based CORM, a derivative thereof or a mixture thereof.
