Abstract
The present invention relates to orthopaedic implants having a fenestrated hollow shell and a biologic core. These design features provide an improved interface between the implant and the surrounding tissue aiding fixation, and provide a vehicle for applying new bone healing and enhancing modalities, such as gene therapy, tissue engineering, and growth factors.

1-48. (canceled)
A musculo-skeletal implant comprising a fenestrated shell component comprising a first end to contact a first vertebra, a second end to contact a second vertebra, an outer fenestrated wall and an inner fenestrated wall inside the outer fenestrated wall, the inner fenestrated wall located entirely around a hollow bore extending through each of the first end of the fenestrated shell component and the second end of the fenestrated shell component, the inner fenestrated wall being integrally connected with the outer fenestrated wall through interconnecting portions extending between the inner fenestrated wall and the outer fenestrated wall, and an open space extending through the first end of the fenestrated shell component between the inner fenestrated wall and the outer fenestrated wall toward the second end of the fenestrated shell component,
- wherein fenestrations of the outer fenestrated wall extend toward the inner fenestrated wall and intersect the open space between the inner fenestrated wall and the outer fenestrated wall.
- wherein fenestrations of the inner fenestrated wall are arranged along a circumferential direction of the Inner fenestrated wall with respect to one another.
- wherein the interconnecting portions are at multiple locations along a longitudinal axis between the first end of the fenestrated shell component and the second end of the fenestrated shell component, and
- wherein the fenestrated shell component is permanently fixable with a host body tissue by integration of at least one of the inner and outer fenestrated walls therewith.
A musculo-skeletal implant comprising a fenestrated shell component comprising a first end to contact a first vertebra, a second end to contact a second vertebra, an outer fenestrated wall and an inner fenestrated wall inside the outer fenestrated wall, the inner fenestrated wall located entirety around a hollow bore extending through each of the first end of the fenestrated shell component and the second end of the fenestrated shell component, the inner fenestrated wall being integrally connected with the outer fenestrated wall through interconnecting portions extending between the inner fenestrated wall and the outer fenestrated wall, and openings extending through the first end of the fenestrated shell component between the inner fenestrated wall and the outer fenestrated wall toward the second end of the fenestrated shell component.
- wherein openings of the outer fenestrated wall extend toward the inner fenestrated wall.
- wherein openings of the inner fenestrated wall are arranged along a circumferential direction of the inner fenestrated wall with respect to one another,
- wherein the interconnecting portions are at multiple locations along a longitudinal axis between the first end of the fenestrated shell component and the second end of the fenestrated shell component, and
- wherein the fenestrated shell component is permanently fixable with a host body tissue by integration of at least one of the inner and outer fenestrated walls therewith.
