Automatic white noise generation for device e-reading mode

A computer-readable medium that stores instructions and an e-book for a computing device, the computing device including a processor, a touch screen display, and a memory storing instructions and a digital content item, the instructions being executable by the processor to cause the computing device to perform operations that include:

• receiving an invocation of the digital content item stored in the memory;
• inferring that the digital content item is an e-book based on a metadata record of the e-book, the e-book having content displayable according to an ordered sequence of digitally constructed pages;
• detecting at least one ambient noise characteristic at the computing device;
• generating sound waves in cancellation of the at least one ambient noise characteristic;
• and
• outputting, from the computing device, the sound waves.

A computing device comprising:

• a memory that stores a set of instructions and an e-book having digital content arranged in a series of digitally constructed pages;
• a touch screen display;
• and
• a processor that access the instructions in memory, the processor further configured to:
• receive an invocation of a digital content item stored in the memory;
• infer that the digital content item is an e-book based on a metadata record of the e-book, the e-book having content displayable according to an ordered sequence of digitally constructed pages;
• detect at least one ambient noise characteristic at the computing device;
• generate sound waves in cancellation of the at least one ambient noise characteristic;
• and
• output, from the computing device, the sound waves.
