Method, system and computer program product for obtaining and displaying supplemental data about a displayed movie, show, event or video game

A system for displaying additional information about a displayed point of interest, comprising:

• a hand held device including a memory, a processor and wireless communication, the handheld device programmed to enable the processor, memory wireless communication to operative an application enabling the system to perform a method, the method comprising:
• capturing an image of a scene from video programming rendering on a multimedia display with a handheld device camera;
• sending the image to a remote server to identify the video programming by matching the image with images of video programming stored in a database;
• receiving notice of a match from the remote server and the availability of supplemental information related to the video programming;
• obtaining the supplemental information with the handheld device from at least one of the remote server or a supplemental server'containing;
• the supplemental information;
• selecting a region within a particular point of interest on the scene of the video programming rendering on a multimedia display to access additional information about the point of interest associated with the region;
• and
• displaying the additional information on at least one of the handheld device or a secondary display in response to selecting the region within the particular frame of the display to access the additional information about the point of interested associated with the region.

A computer program product for enabling a handheld device to determine the identity of video programming rendering on a display screen, and retrieve and display additional information about the video programming, the computer program product comprising a non-transitory storage medium readable by a processor and storing instructions for execution by the processor for performing a method comprising:

• capturing an image of a scene from video programming rendering on a multimedia display with a handheld device camera;
• sending the image to a remote server to identify the video programming by matching the image with images of video programming stored in a database;
• receiving notice of a match from the remote server and the availability of supplemental information related to the video programming;
• obtaining the supplemental information with the handheld device from at least one of the remote server or a supplemental server containing the supplemental information.
• selecting a region within a particular point of interest on the scene of the video programming rendering on a multimedia display to access additional information about the point of interest associated with the region;
• and
• displaying the additional information on at least one of the handheld device or a secondary display in response to selecting the region within the particular frame of the display to access the additional information about the point of interested associated with the region.
