Abstract
The invention provides a lubricating composition containing an aromatic compound and an oil of lubricating viscosity. The invention further relates to the use of the lubricating composition in an internal combustion engine. The invention further relates to the use of the aromatic compound as an antiwear agent.
Claims15
A lubricating composition comprising an oil of lubricating viscosity and an aromatic compound of formula (1):
- wherein
- R1 is a linear or branched hydrocarbyl group containing 1 to 350 carbon atoms, or —C(O)XR3, or —CH═CHC(O)—X3, —C(R6)2C(R6)2C(O)—XR3;
- each Y1, Y2 and Y3 is independently —H or —OR2 with the proviso that at least two of Y1, Y2 and Y3 are —OR2 and where at least two (or three of) —OR2 groups are adjacent to one another;
- R2 is independently hydrogen or a linear or branched hydrocarbyl group containing 1 to 10 carbon atoms;
- R3 is a linear or branched hydrocarbyl group (typically alkyl, aryl, alkaryl, alkoxy, aryloxy);
- X is —O—, —S—, or >NR4, (typically X is —O—, or >NR4);
- R4 is hydrogen or a linear or branched hydrocarbyl group containing 1 to 5, or 1 to 2 carbon atoms, (typically R4 is hydrogen);
- each R6 is hydrogen, —CN, NH2, an ester group —C(O)O—R7, or mixtures thereof;
- R7 is hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl group containing 1 to 30, or 6 to 20, or 8 to 15 carbon atoms;
- and
- the sum of carbon atoms on R1, R2, R3, R4 is at least 1, at least 6, or at least 8.
The lubricating composition of any preceding claim, wherein R2 is hydrogen.
The lubricating composition of any preceding claim, wherein the aromatic compound is present in a range of 0.01 wt % to 10 wt %, 0.1 wt % to 8 wt %, or 0.5 wt % to 7 wt % of the lubricating composition.
The lubricating composition of any preceding claim, wherein the lubricating composition is characterised as having (i) a sulphur content of 0.5 wt % or less, (ii) a phosphorus content of 0.1 wt % or less, and (iii) a sulphated ash content of 1.5 wt % or less.
The lubricating composition of any preceding claim further comprising at least one of an antiwear agent, a dispersant viscosity modifier, a friction modifier, a viscosity modifier, an antioxidant, an overbased detergent, or mixtures thereof.
The lubricating composition of any preceding claim, further comprising an antiwear agent such as a metal dihydrocarbyl dithiophosphate (typically zinc dialkyldithiophosphate), wherein the metal dihydrocarbyl dithiophosphate contributes at least 100 ppm, or at least 200 ppm, or 200 ppm to 1000 ppm, or 300 ppm to 800 ppm, or 400 ppm to 600 ppm of phosphorus to the lubricating composition.
The lubricating composition of any preceding claim further comprising a dispersant viscosity modifier.
The lubricating composition of any preceding claim further comprising an overbased detergent, wherein the overbased detergent is typically selected from the group consisting of phenates, sulphur containing phenates, sulphonates, salixarates, salicylates, and mixtures thereof.
The use in a lubricant of an aromatic compound of formula (1):
- wherein
- R1 is a linear or branched hydrocarbyl group containing 1 to 350 carbon atoms, or —C(O)XR3, or —CH═CHC(O)—X3, —C(R6)2C(R6)2C(O)—XR3;
- each Y1, Y2 and Y3 is independently —H or —OR2 with the proviso that at least two of Y1, Y2 and Y3 are —OR2 and where at least two (or three of) —OR2 groups are adjacent to one another;
- R2 is independently hydrogen or a linear or branched hydrocarbyl group containing 1 to 10 carbon atoms;
- R3 is a linear or branched hydrocarbyl group (typically alkyl, aryl, alkaryl, alkoxy, aryloxy);
- X is —O—, —S—, or >NR4, (typically X is —O—, or >NR4);
- R4 is hydrogen or a linear or branched hydrocarbyl group containing 1 to 5, or 1 to 2 carbon atoms, (typically R4 is hydrogen);
- each R6 is hydrogen, —CN, NH2, an ester group —C(O)O—R7, or mixtures thereof;
- R7 is hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl group containing 1 to 30, or 6 to 20, or 8 to 15 carbon atoms;
- and
- the sum of carbon atoms on R1, R2, R3, R4 is at least 1, at least 6, or at least 8.
