Abstract
A system and method is disclosed for assuring that networked communications between parties playing a game on a network (e.g., the Internet) are not tampered with by either of the parties for illicitly gaining an advantage over the other party. An initial sequence of tokens (e.g., card representations) for playing the game are doubly encrypted using an encryption key from each of the parties. Accordingly, during play of the game neither party can modify the initial sequence of game tokens during the game. At termination of the game, at least one of the parties can fully decrypt the initial sequence of tokens, and thereby, if desired, compare the played token sequence with the corresponding the initial token sequence.

A method for verifying network communications between first and second parties participating in an activity, comprising performing (A), (B), and (C) following by computational equipment:
- (A) providing to a computational machine of the first party, a first version of a data, wherein the data identifies values in applying one or more predetermined machine enforced constraints related to performing the activity, the activity having one or more machine results based on the one or more predetermined machine enforced constraints;
- (B) transmitting, during the activity and via a communications network, one or more portions of a second version of the data to a computational machine of the second party from a transmitting party, the transmitting party being one of the first party and a third party prior to a termination of the activity, wherein the activity uses one or more encrypted network transmissions between the computational machines of the first and second parties, wherein the first and second versions are each encrypted;
- and
- (C) determining at least one of the machine results of the activity;
- wherein at least one of (a) and (b) following occurs after (A), (B), and (C):
- (a) the computational machine of the first party receives a network transmission of a first decoding information for obtaining a decoded form of the first version of the data, wherein a content of the decoded form of the first version of the data provides the computational machine of the first party with information for identifying whether the data was changed during a processing of the activity by the computational equipment;
- wherein the first decoding information for the first version of the data is not used to decode the second version of the data, and
- (b) the computational machine of the second party receives a network transmission of a second decoding information for obtaining a decoded form of the second version of the data, wherein a content of the decoded form of the second version of the data provides the computational machine of the second party with information for identifying whether the data was changed during a processing of the activity by the computational equipment;
- wherein the second decoding information for the second version of the data:
- (i) is not used to decode the first version of the data, and (ii) cannot entirely decode the second version of the data for obtaining the data without additional decoding information not available to the transmitting party.
A method for verifying network communications between first and second parties participating in an activity, comprising performing (A), (B) and (C) following by computational equipment:
- (A) providing to a computational machine of the first party, a first version of a data, wherein the data identifies values in applying one or more predetermined constraints related to performing the activity, the activity having one or more machine results based on the one or more predetermined constraints;
- (B) transmitting, during the activity and via a communications network, one or more portions of a second version of the data to a computational machine of the second party from a transmitting party, the transmitting party being one of the first party and a third party prior to a termination of the activity, wherein the activity uses one or more encrypted network transmissions between the computational machines of the first and second parties, wherein the first and second versions are each encrypted;
- and
- (C) determining at least one of the machine results of the activity;
- wherein the computational machine of the second party receives a network transmission of a second decoding information for obtaining a decoded form of the second version of the data, wherein a content of the decoded form of the second version of the data provides the computational machine of the second party with information for identifying whether the data was changed during a processing of the activity by the computational equipment;
- wherein the second decoding information for the second version of the data:
- (i) is not used to decode the first version of the data, and (ii) cannot entirely decode the second version of the data for obtaining the data without additional decoding information not available to the transmitting party.
An apparatus for verifying network communications, comprising:
- (A) a network site configured for providing an activity to one or more participants, wherein the activity has one or more results based on one or more predetermined constraints related to performing the activity, the constraints enforced by computational equipment;
- (B) a network receiver configured for receiving, from at least one of the participants via a communications network, a first version of a data, wherein the data identifies values in applying the one or more predetermined constraints, and wherein the first version of the data is encrypted;
- and
- (C) an encrypter configured for encrypting a second version of the data;
- (D) a network transmitter configured for transmitting, via the communications network, one or more portions of the second version of the data to the at least one participant prior to a termination of the activity;
- (E) a processor configured for determining at least one of the results of the activity;
- and
- wherein the apparatus further comprises at least one of (a) and (b) following:
- (a) a decoder configured for decoding the first version of the data using a first decoding information received in a network transmission, wherein a content of a decoded form of the first version of the data provides the network site with information for identifying whether the data was changed during a processing of the activity, and wherein the first decoding information for the first version of the data is not used to decode the second version of the data, and
- (b) the network transmitter further configured for transmitting to the at least one participant a network transmission of a second decoding information for obtaining a decoded form of the second version of the data, wherein a content of the decoded form of the second version of the data provides the at least one participant with information for identifying whether the data was changed during a processing of the activity, wherein the second decoding information for the second version of the data:
- (i) is not used to decode the first version of the data, and (ii) cannot entirely decode the second version of the data for obtaining the data without additional decoding information not available to the network site.
