Flexible rules engine for managing connected consumer devices

A computer readable storage medium having instructions that, when executed by a processing device, cause the processing device to perform operations comprising:

• receiving, by the processing device, a notification of a first event on a first network-connected device;
• identifying, by the processing device, a first rule associated with a first user account, wherein the first user account is further associated with the first network-connected device, and wherein the first event on the first network-connected device is an input for the first rule;
• determining, by the processing device, that the first event satisfies a first criterion of the first rule;
• determining, by the processing device, a first action to be performed by a second network-connected device responsive to determining that the first event satisfies the first criterion, wherein the second network-connected device is also associated with the first user account;
• generating a first command for the second network-connected device, wherein the first command causes the second network-connected device to perform the first action;
• and
• transmitting the first command to the second network-connected device.

A system comprising:

• a memory to store a first rule and instructions for a rules engine;
• and
• a processing device, coupled to the memory, to execute the instructions for the rules engine, wherein the instructions cause the processing device to:
• identify a first rule associated with a first user account responsive to receipt of a notification of a first event on a first embedded system, wherein the first user account is further associated with the first embedded system, and wherein the first event on the first embedded system is an input for the first rule;
• determine that the first event satisfies a first criterion of the first rule;
• determine a first action to be performed by a second network-connected device responsive to determining that the first event satisfies the first criterion, wherein the second network-connected device is also associated with the first user account;
• generate a first command for the second network-connected device, wherein the first command causes the second network-connected device to perform the first action;
• and
• transmit the first command to the second network-connected device.
