Abstract
A mandrel for inserting fibers into an embolic coil is provided. The mandrel generally includes a slot for an embolic coil, an anchoring mechanism, a retaining element, and multiple castellations into which fibers can be inserted.
Claims20
A mandrel for attaching fibers to an embolic coil, the mandrel comprising:
- a first end and a second end opposite the first end;
- a slot extending from the first end to the second end;
- a retaining element configured to engage a distal end of the embolic coil;
- an anchoring mechanism configured to engage a proximal end of the embolic coil opposite the distal end;
- and
- a plurality of castellations extending along the slot between the first and second ends.
A mandrel for attaching fibers to an embolic coil, the mandrel comprising:
- first and second ends and a slot extending therebetween, the slot sized to accommodate the embolic coil;
- a retaining element configured to engage a first end of the embolic coil;
- an anchoring mechanism configured to engage a second end of the embolic coil opposite the first end;
- and
- a plurality of castellations extending along the slot between the first and second ends
- wherein at least one of the retaining element and the anchoring mechanism is slidably disposed along the mandrel.
A method of manufacturing an embolic coil using a mandrel, the mandrel having first and second ends, a slot extending between the first and second ends, a retaining element near the first end and an anchoring mechanism slidably disposed along the mandrel, the method comprising the steps of:
- placing the embolic coil within the slot, such that the coil engages each of the retaining element and the anchoring mechanism;
- and
- wrapping at least one fiber around the mandrel, thereby inserting the at least one fiber between adjacent windings of the embolic coil.
