Encoded Representation of Route Data

For a route client that provides maneuvering instructions for a route that comprises a plurality of junctures between a starting location and a destination location on a map, a method comprising:

• receiving route data that comprises maneuvering instructions for a subset of the plurality of junctures between the starting and destination locations;
• for each juncture of the route, determining whether the route data comprises a maneuvering instruction for the juncture;
• and
• generating a maneuvering instruction for each juncture of the route that does not have a maneuvering instruction in the route data.

A method of displaying a section of a route between a starting location and a destination location in a map that can be displayed at different zooming levels, the method comprising:

• identifying a zoom level at which the map is displayed;
• determining whether geometry of the section of the route is available at the identified zoom level;
• when the geometry of the section of the route is available at the identified zoom level, displaying the section of the route on the map using the geometry;
• and
• when the geometry of the section of the route is available at the identified zoom level, displaying the section of the route on the map using another geometry.

For a first route client that uses route data for a route between a starting location and a destination location on a map, a method of compressing the route data that includes a set of maneuvering instructions for a set of junctures located on the route between the starting location to the destination location, the method comprising:

• for each juncture in the set of junctures, displaying the maneuvering instruction so that a user of the route client can follow the maneuvering instruction;
• identifying one or more maneuvering instructions that have been displayed already;
• and
• sending a portion of the route data that does not include the identified maneuvering instructions to a second route client.
