Abstract
A fusion reactor includes an improved ability to modulate a plasma for specific purposes. The reactor operates on the ability to change at least four separate variables in each of a plurality of lenses that are independent of the other lenses. This allows for the generation of Alfvén waves and modulation of the internal plasma dynamics, actively leading to higher states of efficiency. By combining modulation of a plasma in the form of an ion beam with a solid state metal target, an efficient fast neutron source can be produced. This can lead to industrial applications such as energy generation, nuclear clean-up, the production of rare earth metals out of semi-rare ones, and helium production.
Claims23
A variable aperture lens for controlling an ion flow comprising:
- an aperture having a variable diameter and wherein ions in the ion flow can pass through the lens only through the aperture;
- a magnetic lens tract coupled to a first variable voltage and configured to generate a magnetic field;
- a static component having a diameter defining the maximum diameter of the aperture;
- and
- at least one lens shutter coupled to a second variable voltage and configured to adjust the diameter of the lens, wherein the one or more shutters are configured to adjust the aperture diameter, and wherein the aperture diameter can be continuously adjusted between the maximum diameter and a fully closed position in which no ions can pass through the lens.
An apparatus comprising a solid state target for optimizing confinement of a plasma against the target in order to increase an amount of fusion reactions.
A modulatable fusion reactor comprising:
- an ion source for producing an ion flow to the reactor;
- a plurality of lenses wherein each lens has a plurality of variables that can be modulated to control an ion flow;
- a target plate wherein the ion flow strikes the target plate to produce a fusion reaction;
- and
- a reactor wall and a first and second end piece, wherein the first and second end pieces are connected to the reactor wall to enclose a reaction chamber, wherein the variable lenses and target plate are situated within the reaction chamber, wherein ions from the ion source enter the reaction chamber through either the first or second end piece, and wherein the reactor wall and end pieces are connected such that a vacuum can be held within the reaction chamber.
A method for controlling an ion beam using a variable aperture lens, the method comprising:
- adjusting the vertical position of the lens along an axis defined by the ion beam;
- adjusting the diameter of the aperture of the lens, wherein ions in the ion beam can only pass through the lens through the aperture;
- generating an electric field throughout the lens;
- generating a magnetic field throughout the lens;
- and
- wherein each of adjusting the vertical position, adjusting the diameter, generating an electric field, and generating a magnetic field can be independently modulated.
A method for creating high energy neutrons using a fusion reactor with feedback control systems to independently control a plurality of variables and create Alfven waves, the method comprising:
- directing an ion flow into the reactor;
- adjusting a plurality of variable lenses, wherein the ion flow is directed through the lenses, wherein each lens has a plurality of independently modulatable variables, and wherein the plurality of independently modulatable variables includes at least:
- the vertical position of the lens within the reactor;
- the diameter of the aperture of the lens;
- the electric field within the lens;
- the magnetic field within the lens;
- and
- positioning a solid state target plate to react with the ion flow to create fusion reactions.
