Abstract
The disclosed technology provides enables incremental step pulse programming (ISPP) operations with variable pulse step height control. In particular, a storage device is configured to select a pulse step height for an ISPP operation of one or more memory cells of a storage device based on a write frequency of data programmed via the ISPP operation. The storage device saves the data by applying a series of electrical pulses to the one or more memory cells, each subsequent pulse increasing in magnitude by the selected pulse step height.

Apparatus comprising:
- a storage controller configured to select a pulse step height for an incremental step pulse programming (ISPP) operation of one or more memory cells of a storage device based on a write frequency of data programmed via the ISPP operation and to apply a series of electrical pulses to the one or more memory cells, each subsequent electrical pulse increasing in magnitude by the selected pulse step height.
One or more computer-readable storage media encoding computer-executable instructions for executing on a computer system a computer process, the computer process comprising:
- selecting a pulse step height for an ISPP operation of one or more memory cells of a storage device based on a write frequency of data programmed via the ISPP operation;
- and
- applying a series of electrical pulses to the one or more memory cells, each subsequent pulse increasing in magnitude by the selected pulse step height.
A method comprising:
- reading one or more flags from a memory block of a flash storage device;
- based on the one or more flags, determining that data of the memory block includes hot data and cold data;
- selecting a first pulse step height for the hot data and a second pulse step height for the cold data, the first pulse step height larger than the second pulse step height;
- and
- executing an ISPP operation to program the data in another memory block, the ISPP operation using the first pulse step height to program memory cells including the hot data and the second pulse step height to program memory cells including the cold data.
