Snapshots and forks of storage systems using distributed consistent databases implemented within an object store

A method, comprising:

• copying information of a first distributed consistent database as part of forming a second distributed consistent database, said second distributed consistent database representing a seed for a fork within a storage system composed of multiple distributed consistent databases, wherein said information identifies pages and their respective keys shared by both said first and second distributed consistent databases and that the same cannot be deleted;
• and,
• in response to making a change to said fork, changing said second distributed consistent database's version of said information to indicate that a leaf page that was modified as a consequence of said change can be deleted.

A computer system having a processor coupled to a memory, the memory containing program code that when processed by the processor causes a method to be performed, comprising:

• copying information of a first distributed consistent database as part of forming a second distributed consistent database, said second distributed consistent database representing a seed for a fork within a storage system composed of multiple distributed consistent databases, wherein said information identifies pages and their respective keys shared by both said first and second distributed consistent databases and that the same cannot be deleted;
• and,
• in response to making a change to said fork, changing said second distributed consistent database's version of said information to indicate that a leaf page that was modified as a consequence of said change can be deleted.
