Providing external application services with an existing private branch exchange media server

A method comprising:

• receiving, a token, via a Computer Telephone Integration (CTI) channel between a PBX and a external application server, wherein the token is received at the external application server and wherein the token includes information about a media server for a first media stream of a first communication session between a first communication endpoint and a second communication endpoint;
• sending a message, from the external application server to the media server using information from the token to provide an external service for the first media stream of the first communication session;
• and
• providing the external service to the first media stream of first communication session via an external application.

A non-transient computer readable medium having stored thereon instructions that cause a processor to execute a method, the method comprising:

• instructions to receive a token, via a Computer Telephone Integration (CTI) channel between a PBX and a external application server, wherein the token is received at the external application server and wherein the token includes information about a media server for a first media stream of a first communication session between a first communication endpoint and a second communication endpoint;
• instructions to send a message, from the external application server to the media server using information from the token to provide an external service for the first media stream of the first communication session;
• and
• instructions to provide the external service to the first media stream of first communication session via an external application.
