An apparatus for use with a musical instrument, comprising:
- at least one string comprising a treated section configured to enhance optical sensing of the string;
- and
- an optoelectronic pickup comprising:
- at least one light source positioned to direct light to impinge the treated section of the string;
- and
- at least one photoreceiver positioned relative to the at least one light source to detect reflected light from the treated section of the string.

An apparatus for use with a musical instrument, comprising:
- one or more strings each comprising a treated section configured to enhance optical sensing of the one or more strings;
- and
- an optoelectronic pickup comprising:
- a plurality of light sources positioned to direct light to impinge the treated section of the one or more strings;
- and
- at least one photoreceiver positioned relative to the plurality of light sources to detect reflected light from the treated section of the one or more strings.
