Abstract
Flame retardant polymer compositions comprising certain thermally stable salts of pyrophosphonic acid as flame retardant materials, which flame retardant materials comprise one or more than one metals, are prepared and have excellent flame retardant activity.
Claims21
A flame retardant polymer composition comprising:
- a) a thermoset or thermoplastic polymer,
- b) from 3% to 50% by weight, based on the total weight of the flame retardant polymer composition, of a flame retardant comprising one or more compounds of formula (I):
- wherein y is a number of from 1 to 7, M is a metal or ammonium-based cation with a formal charge of (+)y, and q and n are values that satisfy the charge balance of the complex.
A flame retardant material obtained by a process comprising treating phosphonic acid with two or more metal compounds to form an intermediate salt complex comprising salts or complexes having more than one metal component, and subsequently heating the intermediate salt complex at temperatures of 200° C. or higher to form a mixed metal pyrophosphonic salt.
A flame retardant material obtained by a process comprising combining two or more metal phosphonic acid salts to form an intimate salt mixture comprising salts or complexes having more than one metal component, and subsequently heating the intimate salt mixture at temperatures of 200° C. or higher.
