Abstract
A method for painting a component such as a motor vehicle body component includes applying to the component a base coat layer, a pattern such as a decorative strip or a graphic element, and applying a clear lacquer coat. The pattern (7) is applied to the base coat layer without interposing a clear lacquer coat. A corresponding painting facility is provided.

A method of painting a component, comprising:
- applying a base coat layer onto the component;
- applying a pattern onto the component without an intermediate clear coat layer, wherein the pattern is painted onto the component;
- and
- applying a clear coat layer onto the component.
The method of claim 1, wherein the pattern is applied directly onto the base coat layer.
The method of claim 1, further comprising flash-drying of the base coat layer after application of the base coat layer and before application of the pattern.
The method of claim 1, further comprising intermediate drying of the base coat layer after application of the base coat layer and before application of the pattern.
The method of claim 1, further comprising flash-drying of the pattern after application of the pattern and before application of the clear coat layer.
The method of claim 1, further comprising intermediate drying of the pattern after application of the pattern and before application of the clear coat layer.
The method of claim 1, wherein the base coat layer and the pattern are applied wet-on-wet without intermediate drying.
The method of claim 1, wherein the base coat layer and the pattern and the clear coat layer are applied wet-on-wet in a 3-wet process without intermediate drying.
The method of claim 1, wherein the base coat layer and the pattern are applied together at least one of in one paint booth and in directly successive process steps.
The method of claim 1, wherein the pattern and the clear coat layer are applied together in one paint booth or in directly successive process steps.
The method of claim 1, wherein
- the base coat layer, the pattern and the clear coat layer are applied together in one paint booth or in directly successive process steps.
The method of claim 1, wherein the base coat layer and the pattern are applied in separate paint booths.
The method of claim 1, wherein
- the pattern and the clear coat layer are applied in separate paint booths.

- the base coat layer, the pattern and the clear coat layer are applied automatically by means of a multi-axis, freely programmable painting robot.
A coating of paint, comprising:
- a base coat layer;
- a pattern layer painted onto the base coat layer without an intermediate clear coat layer;
- and
- a clear coat layer.
A component of a product having a coating of paint, the coating of paint comprising:
- a base coat layer;
- a pattern layer painted onto the base coat layer without an intermediate clear coat layer;
- and
- a clear coat layer.
