Abstract
Systems and methods for adjusting timing in a communication system, Such as an OFDM system are described. In one implementation an error signal is generated to adjust the timing of a variable rate interpolator so as to adjust FFT timing. The error signal may be based on detection of significant peaks in an estimate of the impulse response of the channel, with the peak locations being tracked over subsequent symbols and the system timing adjusted in response to changes in the peaks.

A method for controlling FFT module timing in a receiver, comprising:
- setting, by timing control circuitry of said receiver, an initial timing of said FFT module;
- generating, by said timing control circuitry of said receiver, a first error signal based on a first characteristic of an output of said FFT module;
- generating, by said timing control circuitry of said receiver, a second error signal based on second characteristic of an output of said FFT module;
- selectively combining, by a combiner of said receiver, said first error signal and said second error signal to generate a third error signal;
- and
- controlling, by said timing control circuitry of said receiver, a resampling of an input to said FFT module using said third error signal.
A system comprising:
- a fast Fourier transform (FFT) module;
- a signal characterization module operable to:
- determine a first characteristic and a second characteristic of an output of said FFT module;
- and
- generate a first error signal based on said first characteristic of said output of said FFT module;
- and
- a timing control and tracking module operable to:
- set an initial timing of said FFT module;
- generate a second error signal based on said second characteristic of said output of said FFT module;
- selectively combine said first error signal and said second error signal to generate a third error signal;
- and
- control a resampling of an input to said FFT module based on said third error signal.
