Re-ranking search results for location refining and diversity

A computer implemented method, comprising:

• receiving a search query from a client device, the search query including a query region;
• accessing a plurality of listings available for booking, each of the listings located in one of a plurality of regions;
• determining, by a computer processor, a listing score for each of the listings based at least on the query region and the region in which the listing is located;
• ranking the listings according to the listing scores;
• determining a query relevance for each of the regions, the query relevance indicating a relevance of the region to the query region;
• modifying the rankings of the listings based on the region relevances, the modifying comprising decreasing the ranking of at least one listing based on the query relevance of the region in which the listing is located;
• ranking each of the listings according to the modified listing score of the listing;
• and
• providing the ranked list to the client device.

A computer readable medium storing instructions, the instructions when executed cause the processor to:

• receive a search query from a client device, the search query including a geographic area that includes at least a plurality of regions;
• access a plurality of listings available for booking, each of the listings located in one of the plurality of regions;
• determine, by a computer processor, a listing score for each of the listings based at least on the region in which the listing is located and the search query;
• rank the listings according to the listing scores, the ranked listings including a top subset of listings ranked above a remainder of the listings in the ranked listings, the top subset of listings located in a subset of the regions;
• modify the rankings of the top subset of listings to add at least one listing from the remainder of the listings, the added listing located in one of the regions not included in the subset of the regions;
• and
• provide the ranked list to the client device.

A computer readable medium storing instructions, the instructions when executed cause the processor to:

• receive a search query from a client device, the search query including a query region;
• access a plurality of listings available for booking, each of the listings located in one of a plurality of regions;
• determine, by a computer processor, a listing score for each of the listings based at least on the query region and the region in which the listing is located;
• rank the listings according to the listing scores;
• determine a query relevance for each of the regions, the query relevance indicating a relevance of the region to the query region;
• modify the rankings of the listings based on the region relevances, the modifying comprising decreasing the ranking of at least one listing based on the query relevance of the region in which the listing is located;
• rank each of the listings according to the modified listing score of the listing;
• and
• provide the ranked list to the client device.
