Using genetic algorithm to design 2-dimensional procedural patterns

A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising program code for:

• receiving a selection of a populate area;
• presenting a plurality of patterns based on a geometry of the populate area;
• receiving a selection of a pattern of the plurality of patterns, the pattern corresponding to a procedural model that was used to generate the pattern, wherein the procedural model is definined in a way that is suitable for genetic exploration;
• evolving, by a processing device, the pattern using genetic exploration on the procedural model by performing mutations or crossovers;
• and
• displaying the evolved pattern in the populate area.

A system comprising:

• a display;
• an input device;
• a memory;
• and
• a processor in communication with the display, the input device, and the memory, the processor configured for:
• receiving a selection of a populate area;
• presenting a plurality of patterns based on a geometry of the populate area;
• receiving a selection of a pattern of the plurality of patterns, the pattern corresponding to a procedural model that was used to generate the pattern, wherein the procedural model is defined in a way that is suitable for genetic exploration;
• evolving, by a processing device, the pattern using genetic exploration on the procedural model by performing mutations or crossovers;
• and
• displaying the evolved pattern in the populate area.
