Abstract
The invention relates to an electronic device for data processing, which includes an execution unit with a temporary register, a register file, a first feedback path from the data output of the execution unit to the register file, a second feedback path from the data output of the execution unit to the temporary register, a switch configured to connect the first feedback path and/or the second feedback path, and a logic stage coupled to control the switch. The control stage is configured to control the switch to connect the second feedback path if the data output of an execution unit is used as an operand in the subsequent operation of an execution unit.

A method of operating an electronic device comprising the steps of:
- executing a data processing operation on at least one data input operand and generating a corresponding result under program control of an instruction;
- storing data in a plurality of accessible read/write data registers;
- writing data in an instruction specified one of the data registers;
- reading data out of an instruction specified one of the data registers;
- temporarily storing the result of the data processing operation;
- connecting
- a first feedback path supplying the result of a data processing operation to a data input to store in an instruction specified one of the data registers,
- a second feedback path temporarily storing the result of a data processing operation, or
- both;
- and
- switching off a clock connected to the register file to control timing of operations in the register file the first feedback path is not connected.
A method of operating an electronic device comprising the steps of:
- executing a data processing operation on at least one data input operand and generating a corresponding result under program control of an instruction;
- storing data in a plurality of accessible read/write data registers of a register file;
- writing data in an instruction specified one of the data registers of the register file, the register file including a dedicated data register;
- reading data out of an instruction specified one of the data registers;
- temporarily storing the result of a data processing operation;
- connecting
- a first feedback path supplying the result of a data processing operation to a data input to store in an instruction specified one of the data registers,
- a second feedback path temporarily storing the result of a data processing operation, or
- both;
- and
- connecting the second feedback path in response to an instruction for writing the result in the dedicated data register of the register file.
A method of operating an electronic device comprising the steps of:
- executing a data processing operation on at least one data input operand and generating a corresponding result under program control of an instruction;
- storing data in a plurality of accessible read/write data registers;
- writing data in an instruction specified one of the data registers;
- reading data out of an instruction specified one of the data registers;
- temporarily storing the result of a data processing operation;
- connecting
- a first feedback path supplying the result of a data processing operation to a data input to store in an instruction specified one of the data registers,
- a second feedback path temporarily storing the result of a data processing operation, or
- both;
- storing a constant in a dedicated read only register;
- connecting the first feedback path if a result of a current operation of the execution unit is to be stored in the instruction specified one of the data registers;
- connecting the second feedback path if the execution unit uses the result of a current operation as an operand in a next sequential operation;
- and
- connecting the second path in response to an instruction using the dedicated read only register.
