Abstract
A railing support post with threaded holes or receivers for receiving threaded hardware, such as might be used for tensioned cable railing. A decorative sleeve or post cover may be used to at least partially enclose the railing support post. The railing support post may be manufactured, for example, by providing an elongated member of a prescribed length, drilling a plurality of holes spaced along the length of the elongated member, and tapping the plurality of holes to form a plurality of threaded receivers. The threaded receivers are configured to receive rail fittings or other fittings.
Claims24
A cable rail assembly, comprising:
- first and second cable rail supports, each cable rail support comprising:
- a post sleeve having a plurality of holes located along a length of the post sleeve;
- a support post having a plurality of cable receivers spaced along a length of the support post, each cable receiver configured to receive a cable rail fitting, the support post sized to fit within the post sleeve;
- and
- a base support bracket coupled to a lower end portion of the support post, the base support bracket configured to enable the support post to be fastened to a surface and further configured for location inside the post sleeve such that a gap is maintained between the post sleeve and the support post;
- and
- a plurality of cable rails, each cable rail configured for tensioning between the support posts of the first and second support posts and comprising:
- a cable;
- and
- a first fitting for coupling the cable to the support post of the first cable rail support;
- wherein a first end portion of the cable rail is configured to pass through a hole of the post sleeve of the first cable rail support and couple, via the first fitting of the cable rail, to a cable receiver of the support post of the first cable rail support;
- and
- wherein a second end portion of the cable rail is configured to pass through a hole of the post sleeve of the second cable rail support and couple to the support post of the second cable rail support.
A fitting for use with a cable rail support assembly that comprises a support post having a plurality of threaded receivers spaced along a length of the support post and an exterior post sleeve configured for securing around the support post and spaced laterally from the support post, the fitting comprising:
- a hollow spacer having sufficient length to span a gap between the support post and the post sleeve and extend beyond an exterior surface of the post sleeve, the hollow spacer configured to pass through a hole in the post sleeve such that an inner face of the hollow spacer rests against the support post and surrounds a threaded receiver of the plurality of threaded receivers and an outer face of the hollow spacer provides a contact surface with the external surface of the post sleeve,
- wherein a force applied to the contact surface of the fitting is transferred to the internal post with little or no force being applied to the post sleeve.
A cable rail assembly, comprising:
- a support post having a plurality of threaded holes spaced along a length of a first side of the support post;
- a post sleeve configured to be placed over the support post;
- a sleeve support configured to couple between the support post and the post sleeve, the sleeve support extending laterally from the support post to engage an inner surface of the post sleeve, such that a gap is maintained between the post sleeve and the support post;
- and
- a plurality of cable rail fittings, a cable rail fitting of the plurality of cable rail tensioners configured to couple between a threaded hole of the support post and an internally threaded end-fitting of a cable rail, the cable rail fitting comprising:
- a first threaded end portion configured to screw into the threaded hole of the support post;
- and
- a second threaded end portion configured to receive the internally threaded end-fitting of the cable rail,
- where:
- the cable rail fitting is sized to pass through the post sleeve without being supported by it,
- the cable rail fitting is sized to span the gap between the post sleeve and the support post, such that the second threaded end portion is external to the post sleeve, and
- a force applied to the cable rail fitting is transferred to the support post with little or no force being applied to the post sleeve.
