Abstract
Various blends of polymers are disclosed, comprising oligopeptide functionalised polymers such as polyisobutylene and polystyrene. Mono-functionalised and di-functionalised polymers (each containing 0 to 5 peptide units beyond its terminal amide group) may be blended with each other and/or with non-functionalised polymers to produce blended compositions. Such compositions are of use, for example, in vibrations dampers. Certain blends also exhibit self-healing properties.
Claims33
Polymer blend comprising:
- at least two (a) monofunctional oligopeptide terminal polymers, or
- at least two (b) difunctional oligopeptide terminal polymers.
Polymer blend as claimed in any preceding claim in which polymer (a), (b) and/or (c) comprises repeating units selected from isobutylene, butadiene, siloxane, acrylate or fluoropolymer units.
Polymer blend as claimed in any preceding claim, in which polymer (a), (b) and/or (c) comprises one or more of isobutylene, isoprene or styrene units.
Polymer blend as claimed in any preceding claim, which is a blend of oligopeptide-terminated isobutylene polymer with oligopeptide-terminated styrene polymer.
Polymer blend as claimed in any preceding claim in which polymer (a), (b) and/or (c) comprises flexible hydrophobic polymer.
Blend as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the oligopeptide-terminated polymer (a) has from 0 to 5 peptide units beyond its terminal amide group and/or polymer (b) has at each end 0 to 5 peptide units beyond its terminal amide groups.
Blend as claimed in any preceding claim in which the oligopeptide moiety of polymer (a) and/or (b) comprises L-alanine units, and preferably consists only of such units.
Blend as claimed in any preceding claim in which the polymer segment of polymer (a) and/or (b) and/or if present (c), each as defined above, is a hydrophobic polymer with a glass transition temperature below 20° C.
Blend as claimed in any preceding claim in the form of a shape-persistent thermoplastic elastomer.
Vibration damping material comprising polymer blend as claimed in any preceding claim.
