Abstract
A novel actuator contains a housing having a first end, a second end, and an inner wall. A piston rod assembly is contained within the housing, wherein the assembly contains a piston rod, a first end cap fixed at one end of the piston rod, and a second end cap fixed at an opposing end of the piston rod. An energy management device is constrained about an outer diameter of the first end cap, wherein upon actuation of the actuator, the energy management device may under predetermined conditions be deformed upon movement of said piston rod.

An actuator comprising:
- a housing having a first end, a second end, and an inner wall;
- a piston rod assembly contained within said housing, said assembly containing a piston rod, a first end cap fixed at one end of the piston rod, and a second end cap fixed at an opposing end of the piston rod;
- and
- an energy management device constrained about an outer wall of said first end cap,
- wherein upon actuation of said actuator, said energy management device under predetermined conditions is deformable upon movement of said piston rod.

An actuator comprising:
- a housing having a first end, a second end, and an inner wall;
- a piston rod assembly contained within said housing, said piston rod assembly comprising a piston rod having a third end proximate to said first end and a fourth end proximate to said second end, and a piston rod inner wall contained within said piston rod;
- a first piston end cap fixed within said third end and having an outer wall, said outer wall having a first portion, and a second portion having a relatively smaller outer diameter than said first portion, wherein said second portion is slidably engageable with the inner diameter of said piston rod inner wall;
- a plenum formed between said second portion and said inner wall;
- and
- a crushable sleeve positioned about said second portion and within said plenum, wherein upon actuation of said actuator, movement of said piston rod crushes said sleeve during a non-load condition.

- a piston rod assembly contained within said housing, said assembly containing a piston rod, a first end cap fixed at one end of the piston rod, and a second end cap fixed at an opposing end of the piston rod, said piston rod assembly having a pre-actuation length defined from the first end cap to the second end cap;

- an energy management device constrained about an outer diameter of said first end cap,
- wherein upon actuation of said actuator, said energy management device may be deformable upon movement of said piston rod, and upon deformation of said energy management device, said piston rod assembly has a post-actuation length, defined from the first end cap to the second end cap, greater than said pre-actuation length.
