Abstract
A pipe cutting tool having: a plurality of rollers; a clamping member moveable between an open position in which a pipe is insertable between the plurality of rollers and a clamping position in which the pipe is secured between the rollers; a cutting apparatus having first, second, and third cutting members configured to optionally sequentially engage the pipe when positioned between the plurality of rollers; a drive motor drivingly connected to at least one of the rollers; and an actuator operatively connected to the drive motor.
Claims30
A cutting tool for a pipe comprising:
- (a) a plurality of rollers;
- (b) a clamping member moveable between an open position in which the pipe is insertable between the plurality of rollers and a clamping position in which the pipe is secured between the rollers;
- (c) a cutting apparatus comprising first, second, and third cutting members configured to sequentially engage the pipe when positioned between the plurality of rollers;
- (d) a drive motor drivingly connected to at least one of the rollers;
- and,
- (e) an actuator operatively connected to the drive motor.
A method of cutting a pipe using a portable cutting tool, the portable cutting tool comprising:
- (a) a cutting apparatus comprising a first and second cutting members, each of which is configured to cut an annular groove in a pipe and a third cutting member positioned between the first and second cutting members wherein the third cutting member is configured to cut the pipe into two sections,
- (b) a longitudinally extending support, the support having a central section located at a position of the first and second cutting apparatus and first and second opposed sections on either side of the central section,
- (c) a plurality of rollers oriented generally parallel to the support and having longitudinally spaced apart ends, and the at least one cutting member is positioned between the spaced apart ends,
- (d) the method comprising:
- (e) placing the pipe on the central section of the support;
- (f) cutting two spaced apart grooves into the pipe and cutting the pipe into first and second sections wherein a first end of each section has a groove and removing the first section of pipe from the first section of the support;
- (g) sliding at least a portion of the second section of pipe along the support to rest upon the first section of the support;
- and,
- (h) cutting a groove into the second section of pipe.
An apparatus for cutting a pipe, the apparatus comprising:
- (a) a base comprising a pipe support having at least one set of lower rollers;
- (b) an upper frame supporting a cutting apparatus and at least one upper roller, the upper frame being moveable relative to the base between an open position in which the pipe may be inserted between the at least one set of lower rollers and the at least one upper roller, and a clamping position in which the pipe is in contact with the at least one set of lower rollers and the at least one upper roller;
- (c) the cutting apparatus comprising a grooving member configured to provide an annular groove on an outer surface of the pipe, a cutting member configured to cut the pipe, and a chamfering member configured to provide a chamfer on the outer surface of the pipe between a location of the annular groove and a location of the cut in the pipe;
- (d) a drive motor drivingly connected to at least one roller of the at least one set of lower rollers;
- and,
- (e) an actuator operatively connected to the drive motor.
