System and method for client policy assignment in a data storage system

A data storage system comprising:

• a plurality of client computing devices, each client computing device of the plurality of client computing devices comprising computer hardware executing one or more software applications which generate primary data that is written to one or more primary storage devices associated with the client computing device;
• a storage manager computing device in communication with the plurality of client computing device and configured to:
• initiate a data storage operation in which primary data associated with a first client computing device of the plurality of client computing devices is accessed from the one or more primary storage devices and written to one or more secondary storage devices to create a secondary copy;
• access a first client configuration profile template associated with the first client computing device, the first client configuration profile template specifying one or more data storage properties associated with the first client computing device;
• and
• store the first client configuration profile template in association with the secondary copy on the one or more secondary storage devices.

A method of performing data storage operations, the method comprising:

• with a storage manager computing device comprising computer hardware and in communication with a plurality of client computing devices:
• initiating a data storage operation in which primary data associated with a first client computing device of the plurality of client computing devices is accessed from one or more primary storage devices and written to one or more secondary storage devices to create a secondary copy of the primary data, the primary data generated by one or more software applications executing on the first client computing device;
• electronically accessing a data structure defining a first client configuration template associated with the first client computing device, the first client configuration template specifying one or more data storage properties associated with the first client computing device;
• and
• storing the first client configuration template in association with the secondary copy on the one or more secondary storage devices.
