Abstract
A light emitting device includes a support having an interstice and at least one LED located in the interstice and at least one of a waveguide or an optical launch having a transparent material encapsulating the at least one LED located in the interstice.
Claims23
An integrated back light unit, comprising:
- a light emitting device assembly comprising a support having an interstice, at least one light emitting device located in the interstice, and an optical launch comprising a transparent material encapsulating the at least one light emitting device located in the interstice;
- a back light waveguide optically coupled to the optical launch;
- and
- at least one of an index matching compound located between the optical launch and the back light waveguide and a circumferential polarizer located around the back light waveguide to reduce light loss from an optical hot spot in the back light waveguide.

A method of making an integrated back light unit, comprising:
- providing a light emitting diode (LED) assembly comprising a support having a plurality of interstices arranged in rows and a respective plurality of LEDs located in each of the plurality of interstices;
- encapsulating the plurality of LEDs with a transparent material which forms at least one of a waveguide or an optical launch which at least partially fills the plurality interstices;
- separating the assembly into rows of encapsulated LEDs to provide a plurality of integrated back light units.
An integrated back light unit, comprising:
- a light emitting device assembly comprising a support having an interstice, at least one light emitting device located in the interstice;
- a back light waveguide directly or indirectly optically coupled to the at least one light emitting device;
- and
- a circuit configured to provide an electrical connection to the light emitting device, wherein the circuit is integral with the support or is mounted to an outside surface of the support.
